HYBRID RHODODENDRONS Rhododendron is one of the most interesting genus of plants. They are found in almost every state and are tall and short, upright and spreading, evergreen and deciduous, and flower in every color of the rainbow, predominantly in the Spring and early Summer. 	Rhododendron 'Bessie Howells' (red catawbiense hybrid x 'Boule de Neige') Flowers an unusual shade of burgundy-red with a darker blotch. FOliage is good, fairly compact. Zone 5. H 5'. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.
	NEW INTRODUCTION Rhododendron 'Brandi'™ (R. 'Scintillation' x white form R. hyperythrum) Light pink buds open white with a large purple blotch. Dense habit with dark green, recurved leaves. 	Rhododendron 'Catawbiense Boursault' (R. catawbiense hybrid x ?) Hardy plant has lavender flowers in a rounded truss. Zone 5. H 5'. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G and 7G.
	Rhododendron 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum' (sport of R. catawbiense) Hardy vigorous and floriferous, lavender trusses cover this handsome plant. Zone 5. H 6'. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G and 7G.
click for larger photo	Rhododendron 'Chionoides' (R. ponticum hybrid) White flowers have yellow centers and make numerous dome-shaped trusses. Broad, dense plant has attractive, narrow foliage and is tolerant of sun and cold. A compact shrub. Zone 5b. H 4'. Blooms mid-season. Available in 3G.
	Rhododendron 'Cunningham's White' (R. caucasicum x R. ponticum var. album) Flushed pink buds open to small white flowers with pale yellow eyes. Has small upright trusses. Plant is spreading in habit and has dark green foliage. Heat tolerant, but needs shade. Zone 5b. H 5'. Blooms late-season. Available in 3G.
	Rhododendron 'English Roseum' (sport of 'Roseum Elegans') Flowers are soft rosey-pink with smooth, glossy leaves of dark green. A vigorous, fast growing hybrid. Zone 4. H 6'. Blooms mid-season. Available in 3G.
	Rhododendron 'Maxecat' (R. maximum x R. catawbiense) Light pink flowers fade to pinkish-white as the truss matures. Mounding form with great foliage. Zone 5. H 6'. Blooms late-season. Available in 3G.
	Rhododendron maximum This plant has been in our garden for many years. Blooms are light pink and the leaves are long and narrow. It has endured the extreme heat over the years. Zone 5. H 10'. Blooms late-season. Available in 3G and 7G.
	Rhododendron 'Nova Zembla' ('Parson's Grandiflorum x red hybrid?) Vigorous grower is probably the best red among the 'Ironclads'. Zone 4. H 5'. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G and 7G.
	NEW Rhododendron 'Purple Passion' PP9981 ('Purple Splendor' x 'Catalgla') A beautiful dark purple bloom with a white flare on the upper lobe. Leaves are deep green. Zone 5. H 5'. Blooms mid April. Available in 7G.
	NEW INTRODUCTION Rhododendron 'Radiance'™ (R. 'Royal Purple' x R. hyperythrum) Deep lavender buds open to light purple. Medium, dense habit. Bred for heat and humidity tolerance. 	Rhododendron 'Roseum Elegans' (R. catawbiense hybrid x ?) Robust, fast growing plant that has good foliage and shape. Flowers are rosy-lilac, held in dome shaped trusses. An old, dependable variety. Zone 4. H 6'. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G and 7G.
	Rhododendron 'Roseum Pink' (sport of 'Roseum Elegans') Rosy-lilac flowers similar to 'Roseum Elegans', but this plant is a more compact grower. Zone 4. H 6'. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.

DECIDUOUS AZALEAS All azaleas are in the Rhododendron genus. They differ by various morphological traits that are wildly interesting to us as hybridizers, but may or may not be of interest to you. (See our page of Resources here, if you'd like more information.) These are mostly natives or hybrids of natives and they lose their leaves in the Winter.
	Rhododendron canendulaceum (Flame Azalea) Deciduous azalea. Has large blooms in late May to June. Most plants have orange flowers but colors vary from yelllow to red. THe showiest and most popular of all native azaleas. Native. Zone 5. H 10'. Blooms June. Available in 3G.
	'Camilla's Blush' (R. canescens) Ball shaped trusses cover this hardy plant. Soft pink blossoms held within the truss perfume the aire with a delightful fragrance. An early presentation sure to delight any gardener. Part of our own 'Maid in the Shade'® Collection. Zone 6. H 8'. Blooms early April. Available in 3G.
	'Creek Side' (Rhododendron arborescens) Deciduous azalea. Also known as 'Running Arborescens'. Practically the same as the species bu it is a much smaller plant and stoloniferous. Blooms are pure white with red stamens and a yellow blotch. Native. Zone 5. H 6'. Blooms late. Available in 3G.

	'Gibraltar' Knap Hill Hybrid Deciduous azalea. Flame orange flowers with ruffled petals. By far the most heat tolerent and vigorous of the Knap Hill group. Often listed as Exbury. Zone 5. H 6 to 8'. Blooms Mid April. Available in 3G.
	'Kennell's Gold' (R. atlanticum x R. periclymenoides) x R. austrinum) Deciduous azalea. Huge, golden-yellow ball shaped, fragrant truss. Planted in good light this plant will consistenly form baseball-size trusses. Named for the late Mr. Auston Kennell. Zone 6. H 10'. Blooms Mid April. Available in 3G.
	'Lavender Girl' (Rhododendron periclymenoides) Soft lavender blooms have a diffused white blotch and are some of the earliest flowers one can enjoy in late March and April. Fragrance is an added charm. Part of the Maid in the Shade® Collection from Transplant Nursery. Zone 4. H 6 to 8'. Blooms early April. Available in 3G.

	'Millie Mac' (Rhododendron austrinum) Deciduous azalea. The yellow center of each flower is bordered with a distinct white margin. Rare and ususual form found in Escambia County, Alabama by Mr. and Mrs. Floyd McConnell. Native. Zone 6. H 8'. Blooms early. Available in 3G.

	Rosy Pink Nudiflorum (Rhododendron periclymenoides) Deciduous azalea. WIth early blooming pink flowers that are rose in bud, this is among the first to bloom. Also known as R. nudiflorum. Native. Zone 4. H 6 to 8'. Blooms early. Available in 3G.
	'Satan' (Knap Hill Hybrid) Deciduous azalea. Flowers are a beautiful scarlet red that bloom in late Spring. Zone 5. H 3 to 6'. Blooms late. Available in 3G.
	'Summer Eyelet' (Rhododendron viscosum) Deciduous azalea. Vigorous plant bears faintly spice scented white bloom in July. Native. Zone 5. H 6'. Blooms late. Available in 3G.
	'Tangerine Delight' (Rhododendron calendulaceum cross) Deciduous azalea. Magnificent truss has glowing bright orange flowers. THis plant was selected from a group of seedlings evaluated over ten years. THis is the best orange native azalea cross we have seen. Native. Zone 5. H 10'. Blooms late April. Available in 3G.

EVERGREEN AZALEAS Evergreen azaleas are also in the rhododendron genus. These are, for the most part, native to Asia. They have been hybridized in the US for almost 100 years, becoming more cold-hardy, floriferous and colorful in the process. For more detailed information, see our Resources page here.
	Azalea 'Delaware Valley White' Large, single white flowers. Drops all the spent flowers at one time, thus avoiding the scalded chicken look! Evergreen. Zone 6. Tall height. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Flame Creeper' Low and spreading. Reddish-orange flower. Evergreen. Zone 7. Low height. Blooms late. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Girard's Crimson' Flowers are a strong purplish-red. Evergreen. Zone 6. Medium height. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Girard's Hot Shot' Hardy, dark reddish-orange flower is a bright spot of color on vivid green foliage. Evergreen. Zone 6. Medium height. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Girard's Rose' Deep rose blooms have wavy edges and cover a wide, bushy plant that is extremely hardy - to -10 F. Evergreen. Zone 5b. Medium height. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Hilda Niblett' The favorite of many people. Perfectly mounded growth habit and large pink and rose flowers with with dark red blotches are obvious reasons. Evergreen. Zone 6. Low height. Blooms very late. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Midnight Flare' §2010 ARS Rhododendron of the Year info here § Deepest red of any flower we have ever seen. Large, single, campanulate flowers. Absolutely breathtaking! Evergreen. Zone 7. Medium height. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Purple Pride' This azalea was bred by the late Dr. H.R. Schroeder. THe ruffled blooms are a deep reddish-purple color. Nice foliafe, compact growth habit, medium grower. Evergreen. Zone 5. Medium height. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Renee Michelle' Deep ruff;ed flower with light red spots. Hardy to -10. Evergreen. Zone 5b. Medium height. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.
	Azalea 'Robin Hill Congo' Spreading plant has vivid deep purple single flowers. Burgundy foliage in the Winter.Evergreen. Zone 6. Low/medium height. Blooms mid season. Available in 3G.

	Abelia x grandiflora 'Canyon Creek' This shrub has a spreading, rounded habit with glossy dark green leaves with a tinge of bronze. New Growth is copper, then yellow to green. White, fragrant flowers. Zone 6. H & W - 3 to 4'. Blooms Summer. Available in 3G.
	Abelia x grandiflora 'Rose Creek' Plant has a lovely low, mounding habit with shiny glossy leaves. Grows well in full sun and has abundant white flowers throughout the Summer. Zone 6. H & W - 6 to 7'. Blooms Summer. Available in 3G.
	Agarista populifolia Formerly Leucothoe populifolia. Arching branches have glossy green leaves. Fragrant cream flowers bloom in May and June. Grows well in moist areas. Shade lover, tolerates moist soils. Evergreen. Southeastern native. Zone 6. H & W - 8 to 12'. Blooms Summer. Available in 3G.
	NEW Aucuba japonica 'Hosoba Hoshi Fu' Long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves are dark green with many yellow splotches and spots. Shade lover that maintains its density even in dense shade. Evergreen. Zone 7. H to 4'. Blooms Summer. Available in 3G.

	Callicarpa americana (American Beautyberry) This purple Beautyberry has arching branches 3 to 4 feet long. Stems are covered in vivid purple berries in late Fall. Zone 5. H & W - 3 to 8'. Blooms Summer. Available in 3G.
	Callicarpa dichotoma 'Early Amethyst'' This Beautyberry is a more compact form, maturing at about 48". It has small pink flowers in the Summer and bright lavender berries in the Fall. Zone 5. H & W - about 4'. Blooms Summer. Available in 3G
	Calycanthus floridus species (Sweetshrub) This deciduous native plant has dark green foliage. The bloom is a reddish-brown with a fruity fragrance. Zone 4. H & W - 6 to 10'. Blooms Summer. Available in 3G.
	Calycanthus floridus 'Athens' This form has greenish-yellow flowers. The foliage is a lustrous green, lighter than the species, and has the same fragrance as long ago. Zone 4. H & W - 6 to 10'. Blooms Summer. Available in 3G.
	Calycanthus x raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine' Super plant with fast growing tall branches covered with large, glossy green leaves and plenty of 2" maroon to wine-red flowers with yellow centers. Slight fragrance. Zone 4. H & W - 6 to 10'. Blooms mid-April to May. Available in 3G.

	Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Prostrata' This Japanese plum yew is grown for its needle-like foliage which is evergreen. It has a low, mounding habit with pendulous branches that arch up and out. Does well in full sun and full shade. Georgia Gold Medal Winner. Zone 7. H to 3', W 5 to 10'. Available in 3G.
	Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Filicoides' Slow growing evergreen with medium green foliage and dense, crowded, curved limbs. Produces 1.5" cones. Evergreen. Zone 4. H to 20'. Available in 3G.
	NEW Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' Has thick, dark green foliage. Evergreen. Pyramidal habit, Zone 5. H 4 to 5', W 3 to 4'. Available in 3G.
	Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Tetragona Aurea' Slow growing evergreen with glossy golden-yellow to bronze-yellow fern-like needles. Branches are ascending to outspreading. Prefers sun to partial shade. Zone 4. Available in 3G.
	Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Paul's Gold' Holds its color in our heat better than and 'Gold Mop' we have grown. Named in memory of Paul Swafford, founder of Swafford Nursery, TN. Evergreen. Zone 5. Available in 3G.
	Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird' A deciduous shrub that prefers full sun to partial shade. Blooms are creamy white, fragrant and continue July through August. Georgia Gold Medal Winner. Zone 4. H 30 to 40". Available in 3G.
	Clethra alnifolia 'Ruby Spice' A deciduous native plant commonly called Sweet Pepperbush. The rose-pink scented flowers bloom from July through late Summer. Zone 4. H 6 to 8'. Available in 3G.
	Clethra alnifolia 'Sixteen Candles' Cultivar of native Sweet Pepperbush that reaches 3 to 5 feet tall. Blooms for 4 to 6 weeks in the Summer with aromatic, erect white blooms - very enticing to butterflies. Leave turn an attractive yellow in the Fall. More compact and dense than 'Hummingbird'. Zone 4. H 3 to 5'. Available in 3G.

	NEW Cryptomeria japonica 'Chapel View'™ Beautiful blue-green color is maintained in colder weather. The small needles and branches shoot upwards and toward the center of the plant, naturally creating a full, dense pyramid. Derived from a witch's-broom found in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Duke University, it is a Plant Introductions, Inc. introduction and royalties are shared with Duke Gardens. Full sun to part shade, moist but well drained acidic soil recommended. Evergreen. Zone 6. H 5 to 10', W 4 to 8'. Available in 3G.
	Drypoteris erythrosora (Autumn Fern) A medium sized fern with evergreen fronds. New growth has an attractive reddish-coppery color, turning dark, shiny green at maturity. Zone 5. H 18 to 24". Available in 1G and 3G.
	NEW Gardenia augusta 'Frostproof'' A fragrant double white flower blooms in Summer. COmpact growth habit with lance-shaped evergreen foliage that is slightly larger than 'Radicans'. Winner of the 2007 Garden Writers Best Plants Award. Zone 7. About 4' by 4'. Available in 3G.
	Gardenia jasminoides 'Daisy' Medium growing dark green plant with fragrant white flowers. Zone 8(7). Available in 3G.
	Gardenia jasminoides 'Griff's Select' Compact, upright growth habit with glossy medium gree nfoliage. Fragrant, single white blooms from May to July, followed by red seed capsules in the Fall. Prefers full sun to partial shade. Zone 7. Available in 3G.
	Gardenia jasminoides 'Radicans' Low growing shrub with narrow, lustrous, dark green leaves. Fragrant waxy white flowers in the Summer. Prefers sun to partial shade. Zone 8(7). Available in 3G.

	NEW INTRODUCTION Endless Summer® 'Bella Anna'™ (Hydrangea arborescens 'PIIHA-1' PPAF) This rich magenta-pink mophead is a breakthrough for H. arborescens! 	Endless Summer® 'Blushing Bride' (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blushing Bride' PP17169) This pure white mophead, second in the Endless Summer® Collection, will gradually take on a subtle blush of pink as the flowers mature. A medium sized plant that will re-bloom throughout the season on both old and new wood. The deep, dark green foliage highlights each bloom. Zone 5. H & W 3 to 6'. Available in 8" and 3G.
	Endless Summer® 'Twist-n-Shout'™ (Hydrangea macrophylla 'PIIHM-1' PP20176) This is a re-blooming lace cap, offering blue blooms in acidic soils and pink blooms in alkaline soils throughout the entire Summer. Zone 5. H & W 3 to 5'. Available in 8" and 3G.
	Hydrangea quercifolia species Oakleaf hydrangea! Medium sized, deciduous, native shrub has deeply lobed green leaves that become orange, red and purple in the Fall. Large heads of creamy white flowers are displyed in the Summer for a long period, turning pinkish and then dark tan. Zone 5. H to 8'. Available in 3G.
