Large shrub or small tree. Conical or columnar habit.
18 to 25 feet high by 10 to 15 feet wide but may grow as tall as 40 feet in the wild.

Smaller than that of other species, distinctly grooved on the back. Bright yellow-green changing to dark green.
 
 
 
Dry, capsule like fruits have small curved “horns” while those of the American Arborvitae do not have such “horns.”  Such wingless seeds distinguish this species from the others in the genus, Thuja.
 
 

‘Aurea Nana’ (Berckman’s Golden Arborvitae) - Dwarf, dense, globular to ovoid form to 5’ tall, foliage golden yellow.

‘Baker' - Bright green foliage, densely set needles and broad conical shape.

‘Beverlyensis’ - Upright cone shaped to globe outline, soft golden yellow foliage turning bronzy gold in winter.

‘Blue Cone’ - Upright pyramidal form with green foliage with a bluish cast.

‘Bonita’ - Dwarf form, broadly conical, new growth yellow-green.

‘Compacta’ - Pyramidal, dense, formal, slow-growing form, tips plum colored in winter,

‘Conspicua’ - A medium-size to large shrub of dense, compact, conical habit, foliage golden yellow.

‘Elegantissima’ - Narrow pyramidal, foliage in flat sprays, emerges bright golden yellow.

‘Filiformis Aurea’ - Similar to ‘Filiformis Erecta’ but having more yellow-green foliage in summer.

‘Filiformis Erecta’ - Young, plants have upright cord-like branching habit, eventually forming upright oval-shaped shrub.

‘Golden Ball' - Dwarf loosely rounded habit, soft golden foliage in summer, vivid orange-brown tints in winter.

‘Golden Globe’- Semi-dwarf, golden globe, 3’ by 3’.

‘Green Cone - Upright oval, bright green foliage produces abundant cones.

‘Minima Glauca’ - Narrow pyramidal form, becoming 3 to 4’ high and nearly as wide at maturity.

‘Sieboldii’ - Bright green foliage on a dense mounded plant that rarely exceeds 6’ in height.

‘Sunkist’ - Dwarf globose form, dense flattened foliage with bright golden tips, 2’ by 2’.

‘Westmont’- Compact, globe-shaped, slow growing type with rich dark green foliage tipped with yellow from spring to fall.
