This very dwarf version
of the Spanish Fir grows extremely densely. Growth is fairly slow at first,
forming a slowly expanding blue ball. The plant shown is about 7 years
old after grafting onto balsam fir and is starting to form a leader. It
is about 3 feet tall. It would be interesting to see what form will
develop in the next few years. However, to maintain compact growth the leader
could be pruned out below the top whirl of branches. Spanish Fir is almost
extinct in its Spanish mountain native habitat, but the few remaining groves
are now protected. It is drought resistant when established. Needs good
sun for best color and growth, at least 6 hours per day.
River Rock Nursery is a retail, mail order nursery, also open daily.
