Golden-leaved evergreen with an upright habit. We planted ours in the early years of our garden; I have no record of the cultivar name, so I'm going with 'Aurea' or 'Crippsii' for now, which it at least resembles. It found a home near what was then our rock garden, and is now our rock garden annex, along the front walkway of our home. I don't think I realized at the time that it would grow into a sizeable tree; it took more than 15 years, but it has now reached to the roofline of our garage. The good news is that it has stayed relatively narrow around, so it hasn't outgrown its space – and it has grown more attractive with age. It doesn't mind its station in life, which gets a little bit of everything: lots of snow piled alongside in winter, some periods of drought most summers, and no fertilizer of any kind. Maybe those conditions are close enough to its native Japan...
