Picea glauca 'Dent'

Picea glauca 'Dent'

Picea glauca ‘Dent’ or Dent White Spruce is a uncommon cultivar that is rarely found in the nursery trade. It is a full sized White Spruce so it would be suitable for the larger property. What is striking about the cultivar is the pattern of entire shoots having one color and an adjacent shoot being slightly different in shade. The overall effect is sort of a patch work which interests the eye. There are trees with an ‘air brush’ look like Picea mariana ‘golden’ or even Picea orientalis ‘Skylands’ has darker colored needles beneath the bright yellow ones. However Dent is the only spruce cultivar that I have come across that has different colored shoots, some being pale green to yellow, and others being typical blue green. The white spruces seem to grow best in colder climates. Rate of growth can be considered moderate to fast. Full sun to mostly sun is preferred. Propagation is by grafting onto Picea abies ( Norway spruce ) understock.
