Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) - born Douglas Elton Thomas Ullman Fairbanks, Sr., was an actor, screenwriter, director, and producer best known for his swashbuckling roles in silent films, as well as for having married actress Mary Pickford. Douglas Elton Ullman was born in Denver, Colorado, and began acting on the Denver stage at an early age. After leaving East Denver High School during his senior year, Fairbanks (the surname his mother gave him when his biological father abandoned them when he was five) moved to New York in the early 1900s to pursue an acting career. In 1907, Fairbanks married Anna Beth Sully and they had one son, Douglas Elton Fairbanks - who later became known as Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. The family moved to California in 1915 and later that year, Fairbanks signed a contract with Triangle Pictures. By 1916, Fairbanks had established his own company, The Douglas Fairbanks Film Corporation, eventually landing a job at Paramount. He met actress Mary Pickford at a party that same year, and the two began an affair. Just two years later, in 1918, Douglas Fairbanks was Hollywood's most popular actor, and the third highest paid. During this time, Fairbanks and Sully divorced (1918); Fairbanks, Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith formed United Artist (1919); and Pickford and her husband, Owen Moore divorced. Fairbanks and Pickford were finally able to marry on March 28, 1920, settling down at their Beverly Hills estate, Pickfair. In 1921, Fairbanks, Pickford, Chaplin and others helped to organize the Motion Picture Fund. In 1927, Fairbanks was elected first President of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences, and presented the first Academy Awards in his studio office. Fairbanks' last silent film was in 1929, and the last film he acted in was in 1934, after which he retired from acting. Fairbanks and Pickford separated in 1933 and divorced in 1936. In December 1939, Fairbanks had a heart attack in his sleep and died a day later in his Santa Monica home; he was 56 years old. His funeral service was held at the Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, where he was placed in a crypt in the Great Mausoleum. Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 7020 Hollywood Boulevard.
The fourth Annual Motion Picture Golf Tournament at the Lakeside Country Club. View 2 shows Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. dressed in a white shirt and white pants, standing next to a man identified as George Marshall, who is dressed in white golf pants, tan sweater, striped socks and cap. This Mr. Marshall is most likely George E. Marshall (1891-1975), actor, screenwriter, producer, and film and television director, mostly known for co-directing the film, "How the West Was Won". A large trophy is on the lawn between the two men.
