Bugs Bunny 75th anniversary: Watch his first 'What's up, Doc?'

Bugs Bunny turns 75 on July 27, and while the famous cartoon rabbit hasn’t aged a day, Time took a look back at just how much the hare has changed since his debut.

Bugs debuted in the incarnation that has survived for decades in the 1940 cartoon A Wild Hare, which includes the first time he uttered his iconic catchphrase, “What’s up, Doc?” The clip, posted by Time, showcases the bunny’s humble beginnings, as well as how he first came to life.

“The Wild Hare bunny is uncredited, though that changed before the year was up,” Time‘s Lily Rothman wrote. “Bugs was an instant star. By 1954, Time noted that he was more popular than Mickey Mouse.”
