Description

Leaves: Similar to Atlas cedar, but dark to light green, not blue.

Twigs/buds: Twigs green to brown, hairless to irregularly hairy; short, slender, stiff; numerous. Buds small and round.

Flowers/fruit: Monoecious. Seed cones held singly and about 3" to 5" long and 2" to 2-1/2" wide.

Bark: Gray-brown and smooth when young; becoming darker, pebble-like, rough, cracked, and furrowed with age.

Wood: Aromatic, durable, hard, decay-resistant; has oil used in perfumes; important for timber in the ancient Middle East; written about in the Bible.

General: Native to the Taurus Mountains, Turkey, and Lebanon. Slow growth rate. More cold-hardy than Deodar cedar. Shade intolerant.

Landscape Use: Very good specimen tree with wide-spreading branches and dark green leaves; flat-topped when old. Zones 5-7.
