UBC Accession #25449-526-86 Location: BC Native Garden Photo by Wendy Cutler May 31, 2012 This tree has such beautiful cones. It's the tree in the right foreground in the first photo.
Re: Abies lasiocarpa 'Aurea' As nice it is, I don't believe that's what it is. Douglas has the correct identification.
Re: Abies lasiocarpa 'Aurea' That's Abies koreana, not A. lasiocarpa. Guess it'll have to be moved, as it isn't a BC native so is out of place right next to the BC Native Garden sign ;-). Abies lasiocarpa has larger cones with concealed bracts, and needles more uniformly glaucous on both sides and with an acute apex. Pic: Walter Siegmund, cc-by-sa license
Re: Abies lasiocarpa 'Aurea' Subalpine fir foliage is also less firm and prim, with leaves of Korean fir tending to be quite short as well. This selection is fairly prevalent in commerce. There has been discussion of the cultivar name being invalid in conifer publications of some years ago, with as I remember it 'Luminetta' having been put forward as a replacement.
Re: Abies lasiocarpa 'Aurea' Indeed, this is Abies koreana 'Aurea'. It's a pretty little tree that was purchased in 1987 from the now defunct Adera Nursery (Victoria, BC). It will be relabeled and moved to somewhere more appropriate in the garden.
