This Compact Andorra Juniper is somewhat commonly planted in yards and landscapes in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast USA, offered by many conventional and big box store garden centers-nurseries. It seems to be all male (staminate) clones that don't bear any juniper berries. It develops some purplish foliage color in late fall to early spring, like most all Creeping Junipers. The summer foliage is grayish-green and sort of prickly because it has both the prickly awl-like needles and the soft scale-like needles of junipers. The real cultivar name is 'Plumosa Compacta.' The original Andorra Juniper that is about 2 to 2.5 feet high was named after Andorra Nurseries in Philadelphia, PA of the early 1900's. The form that is really used nowadays is the 'Plumosa Compacta Youngstown' that is resistant to Juniper Phomopsis Blight, a fungus, that in the past has attacked the foliage and stems of Andorra Junipers, plus many other cultivars of the Creeping Juniper. Overall, it is a good juniper groundcover.
