Plant Description: An evergreen coniferous tree that can grow to be 150 ft. Pyramidal when young, Calocedrus decurrens gathers irregularity in its structure with age. Branches are flattened vertically, appearing fan-like. Bark is reddish brown and broken into scales in young trees, turning into fibrous ridges. Small scale-like leaves are in whorls of four, aromatic when crushed. Flowers in the spring with small red-brown cones maturing by the fall.

  • Soil needs: Moist, well-draining soil. Tolerates many different soil types.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: This Willamette Valley native grows in montane forests of the Coast Range, Cascades of Oregon, and the Sierra Nevadas of California. Often found in mixed conifer forests in canyons and slopes between 2000-8000 ft. This is an excellent plant for woodland gardens and provides habitat for wildlife.
