Root Ball Western Red Cedar
(Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens')

Thuja Plicata's glossy, green foliage can form the ideal evergreen screen for protection against wind and noise, as well as adding that needed length of privacy.

Root Ball Western Red Cedar is only available to buy and plant throughout November - March, but can be pre-ordered at any time outside of the Root Ball season.

Wester Red Cedar displays striking sprays of glossy, dark-green, conifer foliage, with a sweet, pineapple-like scent when crushed between the fingers. Due to its dense nature, it's the perfect, enticing, conifer hedge for any garden surrounding heavy traffic (as it has the ability to successfully absorb surrounding pollution particles).

Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' can also produce little cones, but these are a little insignificant as the plant is best loved for its rich, dense leaves. The tall stature will easily provide a perfect background to any small, colourful plants that need a plant friend to help them stand out!

Western Red Cedar will flourish well in any soil type that's well-drained, and in full sun- full shade. It's known as a fast-growing hedge, with a growth rate of 40-60cm per year. You can even cut back into old wood without the risk of the foliage browning (which you can't do with Leylandii), therefore making it that much easier to care for and maintain.
  • Growth rate: Fast (40-60cm per year)
  • Ideal height: 2.5m+ Tall
  • Soil type: Normal
  • Exposure: Coastal, exposed, inland
  • Aspect: Semi-shade, full sun
  • Evergreen foliage? Yes

When your receive your Thuja plicata root ball plant, it will need to be planted within a couple of weeks or so, and must be well-watered during this time. Do not allow the soil to dry out- this will more than likely damage the roots altogether.̴Ì?

Looking after Cedar hedging is rather simple. You will only need to give it a couple of trims a year to keep it neat and under control- once during Spring, then again at the beginning of Autumn.

  1. If you're not ready to plant straight away, your root balls will need to be kept moist and in a cool, dark room (i.e., garage or shed). Ideally, they should be planted straight way, but can last up to 3 days or so.
  2. Dig a hole that is several inches wider than the root ball, but about the same depth. Soak the hole with water, and sprinkle a thin layer of RootGrow at the bottom, if using.
  3. Ensure the root ball has been given plenty of water, then put the damp root ball into the soil, and begin backfilling with soil. Check the base of the stem is level with the surface of the soil, or just under.
  4. Firm the soil down lightly, then give the plant a good watering.
  5. Like all plants, it will need to be kept free of weeds and given plenty of water- it's first year after planting is vital, as the plant needs enough resources to be able to settle down, recover, and establish.

Root Types Summary

  • Bare Root
    Bare Root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot Grown
    Pot Grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root Ball
    Root Ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant Hedging
    Instant Hedging

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hegding troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
