There are many varieties of cedar, many of which are not tolerant of our climate.  Below we have several varieties that perform well in our region.


Holmstrup Arborvitae

Height:  4 - 5 ft
Spread:  1.5 - 2 ft
Foliage:  Dark Green
Fall Foliage:  Evergreen
Zone:  3 - 8 

 

Thuja occidentalis 'Holmstrup'

A compact plant with an upright habit. Bright green color and light bushy foliage gives the plant a textured appearance. Does well in light shade, tolerates poor drainage. A great hardy upright evergreen for the landscape.

Pyramidal Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'Pyramidalis'

Perhaps the most popular Arborvitae we carry, the Pyramidal has many uses in the landscape.  A fast growing, hardy, narrow, cone-shaped evergreen. Bright green, soft foliage. Shape easily maintained by minimal trimming.

Techny Arborvitae

Height:  12 - 15 ft

Thuja occidentalis 'Techny'

The Techny has a slightly shaggier habit than the Pyramidal and tolerates our climate well.  Resistant to winterburn, which is perhaps biggest problem our climate offers.  Fast growing and dark green. Excellent for screens and tall sheared hedges. Good in sun or light shade. Very winter hardy.

Woodward Globe Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'Woodwardii'

Rich green. Retains its globe shape without trimming. Good in full sun or light shade.

Thuja occidentalis 'Little Giant'

This small, globe-shaped evergreen shrub is a very versatile and useful plant, noted for holding its color well, even through the winter months. The rich green foliage and small form make this a wonderful foundation plant, specimen or hedge.
