This weekend, Munich provides the setting for the annual meeting of ISOH.

This year’s gathering coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Olympic Games in the city.

Remembrance of the terrible events in the Israeli quarters at the Olympic village and subsequently at Furstenfeldbruck Airbase will be commemorated as part of the programme and there will be presentations on a number of aspects of Munich 1972 during the course of the sessions over the weekend.

These will include a presentation by our secretary Markus Osterwalder on  “Forgotten and unknown images from Munich 1972.”

In that spirit we present some other pictures from the Games which have not seen the light of day for many years.

As the Games were held in Central Europe they were easily accessible to visitors from neighbouring countries.

Organised tours were becoming popular and the Swiss established a “Schweizer Olympiadorf” in modest accommodation close to the Olympic city.

Amongst the visitors who chose to visit the Games in this way was Ernst Muller who compiled a scrapbook of his memories of the Games.

This was recently discovered in an antiquarian book shop.

The material Mr. Muller compiled presents a highly individual view of the Games.

The photographs from this pre-digital era are modest but they certainly capture the time and spirit of the Olympics 50 years ago.
