ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sri Dinesh Rawat, a “Green Miracle Man” is popularly known for writing books from his own experience. His previous book “Palms for India” became very popular because of its easy presentation to the readers. He is born and brought up in the city of Kolkata, a concrete jungle. He spent about 50 years of his life living in apartments. In 2002 he shifted his abode to a village called Samukpota in South 24 Parganas of West Bengal. He is the founder of 'Green Mall' having 25 acres of nursery altogether and plantations with over 2500 species of plants, perhaps one of the largest collection in India! He has widely travelled covering over 60 countries and studied art and technology of growing and rearing plants by visiting leading nurseries and botanical gardens all over, and taking lessons from leading horticulturists of the world. A.J.C.Bose Indian Botanic Gardens, Howrah has signed the MOU under which Sri Rawat is providing all necessary assistance for rejuvenation of Palms collection at this famous Botani Gardens. Concerned about the cause and effect of global warming, he has dedicated his life inspiring people to love and live with nature. In the process he has created two albums of songs “Prakriti Ki Pukar” and “Prakriti Vandana” with his own lyrics. It is for the first time that someone has cared to compose several songs entirely dedicated to environment. He has also started a Forum for Nature lovers “Prakriti Bandhu” to inspire responsible people of India to live in harmony with nature. At Green Mall, his focus is to motivate people to green their surroundings by simple and easy manner. Prompted by his desire to inspire every household to “Go Green”, he came out with an idea of writing a book in simple language so that everyone can grasp small-tips and achieve big results for their home garden.

We are getting away from nature... How far can we go?

GREEN YOUR SURROUNDINGS Our Home is a sanctuary. It is a place that provides the intimate feeling of belongingness and a space for rest and renewal for an individual or family. Here we expect freedom, peace and tranquillity. We need protection from exterior and outside world we participate every day. Thus, we devote our life-savings, our talents and ourselves to make it as pleasant, relaxing and soothing as possible. It serves as a showcase of success and stature. It is where we entertain our relatives and friends. It is an extension of one's identity and an avenue to display one's taste in art, creativity and design. A person spends best of his ability in construction by choosing best of tiles, marbles, furniture and fittings. He procures best of gadgets like TV, music system, computer and decorative items. But very few pay due consideration to the aesthetic aspect that makes the home most pleasant. Here greening one's surroundings should be the most important factor but quite often it is neglected. Exterior of a house is much more important. Interiors are appreciated only by those who dwell in or by the visitors. But exterior will be appreciated by all passers-by, neighbours and visitors. It will spell out one's aesthetic sense and love for the environment. A beautiful green with a touch of nature is appreciated by all. Very often we just fill up our space with some plants or trees without paying any thought as to how it would turn out in days to come. We do incorporate plants and trees in our garden without thinking as to what they would look to be in some years of growth. Ordinary and common trees grow large taking a lot of space. We neither like to cut them down nor like to retain them as well. They cannot be replaced like we can easily do with other belongings i.e. furniture, computers, gadgets etc. We should, therefore, be very careful and thoughtful at the very beginning and thereafter make proper selection for planting good and uncommon plants and trees which in due course shall spell the class and taste by themselves.

6

Again, at times we make decisions of plantation recommended by our mali /gardener which are normally some common and cheap plants. Thereafter we have to be with them for years together and even sometimes for generations. It is always desirable to consult an expert landscaper or horticulturist for necessary advice and then buy plants from reputed nurseries only. These days, grown up specimen palms and trees are available and they can be used to create a mature garden within a couple of days. Initially, they may be a bit expensive but if one considers the other elements of cost involved in rearing them, he shall find it wiser and cheaper to go for mature, grown-up and specimen palms, trees and shrubs. Even someone living in a one room / comparatively small flat of a multi storied apartment, still he shall have ample of opportunity to green his surroundings with some air purifying indoor and partial shade loving plants. These plants can be placed in hanging baskets and pots in balconies, in window planters on window sills and also in nice pots at the entrance and in the living room. Those living in apartments should preferably avoid using clay pots which may create mess due to breakage with passage of time. Instead, Pots of fibreglass, plastic, terra-porcelain, cement and ceramic shall be a better choice. Only then, it will be, perhaps possible, to make one's home a real sanctuary.

FOREWORD The rapid pace of urbanization has been squeezing land space available and compellingly shoving urban populace adapts apartments for dwelling. But instinctively and preferentially, humans, given the opportunity and time, love to be in the midst of/experience nature. Their desire to live among green trees turns perceptible when they attempt to generate green patches in the limited spaces they can afford to spare. The book presently written has meant for them and addressed issues more expansively in developing home gardens in restricted spaces available to them. It gave very simple suggestions those can be easily adapted. The selection of plants (which type, shape and size of plant would be the right choice), their placing as per Indian Vastu (Tulsi (Basil) in north, east or north-east, creepers at entrance and thorny plants, cactus avoiding inside spaces), types of pots to be chosen, watering, the essential humidity levels, lighting including the effects of low lighting, nutritional requirement and fertilizing for complete growth were deliberated. Hanging plants, water plants, rooftop terrace gardening and common diseases that one comes across and the suggested cures are also dealt with. Tools and implements needed to care these plants day to day are given. I am hopeful the publication boosts in building green spaces to counter adverse effects of polluters/pollutants besides turning everyone concerned for a green shift. Dr. M. Sanjappa, Ph. D. WHY THIS BOOK During my days at Green Mall, I have come across many people who are very keen to keep their home and surroundings green; but they are unable to cope up with the challenges faced by them in maintaining plants. Also I have met people who have ultimately given up rearing plants in their houses, considering it to be a big headache. Many have had bitter and frustrating experiences like broken pots, outgrown plants, sick plants, fertilisation, pesticides etc. Worst of all has been terrible experiences with 'Malis'. Most of the people have no time and inclination to turn over the pages of relevant botany books and surfing internet to find out solutions. Actually their problems are minor in nature and with a little bit of interest and understanding, anybody can have a pleasing experience of home garden. I, therefore, decided to write this “small-tips BIG RESULT book in a very simple language so that anyone, even without any knowledge in botany, should be able to enjoy the benefit and pleasure of a home garden. I also decided to include pictures and brief description of plants that are suitable for home garden and are also easily available. Had I gone into full details, it would have become another book on botany. I have decided to write in brief, focusing only on the points concerning home gardeners. I hope that the readers living in apartments and multi-storey building would find this book highly useful in day to day care of their plants including selection of plants. However, I shall remain highly thankful to my readers for their suggestions and feedback which will be genuinely considered for the next edition.

WHY WE LOVE PLANTS I have rarely come across a person who does not like plants. Every human being loves nature even if he/she is living in the most developed city at a hi-fi apartment and working in the midst of highly technical and sophisticated environmental conditions. The urge of nature is felt by one and all. Nature is our basic human instinct. From time immemorial human beings have been living amidst pure nature; it's only for last two centuries that we have been gradually getting away from nature in the name of development. Plants are the most important features of the nature; they provide food to entire humanity. They also provide us with medicines, flowers, aromas and ornaments. In one line, we cannot think of human existence without plants. Sight of a small plant, tree, fruit, and even a flower is always soothing to our eyes. Plants purify air in the atmosphere and protect earth in many ways. They create liveliness. Even highly sophisticated and expensive human built structures like multi-storeyed complexes, hotels, factories look barren without plants. Everyone, poor or rich like to have at least a few plants in and around their houses. Therefore loving plants is none but natural human instinct and we do hardly come across a person who does not like plants. This is why every human being loves plant!

13

IMPORTANCE OF HOME GARDEN Urbanisation is taking place all over the world at an unprecedented rate and land space per head is getting squeezed day by day. We have come into such an age that most of us have become apartment dwellers of multi-storey buildings. Air around us is quite polluted. Under these circumstances, it is very essential to have our own home garden. NASA and ALCA (Associated Landscape Contractors of America) conducted a study in late 1980s and found that plants purify the air inside a house. It is an established fact that plants convert carbon dioxide in the air into oxygen through photosynthesis, but very few of us know that they also remove harmful elements such as trichloroethylene, benzene and formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is used in many building materials including particle board and foam insulations. Additionally, many cleaning products contain this chemical. Benzene is a common solvent found in oils. and paints. Trichloroethylene is used in paints, adhesives, inks, and varnishes. Plants are not only soothing to our eyes but looking at green is also good for our eyesight. The flora provides pleasant aroma. Besides, there are lot of utility plants like basil (Tulsi), aloe vera, neem, curry leaves, all-spice, ajwain, green chilli, lime, lemon grass etc. which can be useful in our daily life. If we have sizeable space, we can even enjoy the pleasure of growing some vegetables in organic manner! We can also have the satisfaction of growing seasonal flowers; it all depends on how much space we have at our disposal. Blooming and growing of plants fill our soul with immense satisfaction and joy. It is indeed a pleasure to witness new emerging leaves, buds, flowers or fruits! Plants create a liveliness and vibrancy in the atmosphere. Above all they are extremely beautiful ornaments to adorn our house with available in many colours and shades; they are the most beautiful and meaningful gift of nature!

14

HURDLES & SOLUTIONS Despite our desire to have green around us, very often we find it difficult, get discouraged and therefore we give up the idea. From experience of people, following are the main problems in developing home garden and rearing of plants. When we buy plants, we often fail to make right selection. We should know which plant is suitable for our house. We must buy plants according to the availability of space and lighting conditions. Generally what happens, we go to a plant seller or a nursery and buy whatever we like and place them in and around our house. Right approach would be to identify the space at first and decide thereafter which type, shape and size of plant would be the right choice and buy accordingly. In following chapters we would talk about those plants elaborately.

Sometimes planting pots, containers and planters are other problems. Broken and discoloured pots generally create a shabby look. Very often plants outgrow the pot, thereby exposing its hard roots, sometimes also resulting in cracking and breaking of pots. We often find that soil gets depleted from the pots due to rain and regular watering, leaving us perplexed. Providing food and right fertilisers are all common problems. Attacks by pests and insects also become an added headache. Therefore, rearing plants is always a challenging task for which many sacrifice the benefits of having plants around them. Mortality and unhealthy plants are highly discouraging and a painful plight for any plant lover; these are the main reasons as to why many of us give up the idea of keeping plants in our houses. Object of this book is to help readers to cope up easily with these challenges and difficulties in such a manner that they feel proud to keep their surrounding green.

15

PLANT SELECTIONS As you are reading this book it indicates that you are quite serious about greening your surroundings. In order to achieve pleasure of success in home garden, primary step is right selection of plants. First identify the floor area where you would like to place pot plants, then identify if you have some space for hanging plants in your balcony or windows, if there is some ground area available, consider that also. If roof is under your disposal, see how much of it can be used for pot plants.

For interiors and living rooms, plants which can survive in low light are suitable. We must visualise what shape of plant would be appropriate for the space available, like slender tall, bushy tall, leafy, bushy, short or groundcover. While making a decision, we should give first preference to plants which purify air; second, to utility plants and then to ornamental and exclusive plants. In other chapters of the book you would get details of plants which purify air and are good for our health. In some regions, people follow certain guidelines like Vastu, Feng shui etc. if you believe in them; you can make selection keeping them in mind. In forthcoming chapters we have mentioned about them. Raising plants from seedling level is quite difficult and cumbersome as their resistance power is low; hence, we should always buy stable plants from reputed nurseries. Going for hanging pot plants is good idea as it allows a vertical gardening, saves floor space and creating green beauty all around.

16

PLANTING POT SELECTION There are several types of pots available in the market. You must select some ones suitable for your plants. Generally the pots in which plants are sold by nurseries are of inferior quality because they grow plants in bulk and need to be cost effective. Therefore, it is better that you buy pots suitable for your requirement and transplant the bought out plants into them. Terra-porcelain pots: They are an excellent choice for home garden, quite strong compared to clay and terracotta pots. They are free from discolouration and light in weight. These are best choice also for hanging plants in balconies. However these pots are generally not available in sizes over 14 inches.

Ceramic Pots: These pots come in various shapes and colours but are rarely available in larege sizes. Although expensive, they create an exclusive dĂŠcor to interiors; these pots are free from headache of discolouration and also very easy to clean. Clay or Terra-cotta pots: These pots are most commonly used and found to be cheapest. These pots do not come in standard quality and it is quite difficult to ascertain the quality. The clay used for making pots and quality of baking is quite vital for its uniform strength and we cannot check all these factors with bare eyes. So if you are sure of getting good quality clay or terra-cotta pots, that can be equally good choice, but still you should be prepared for some discolouration and breakage every now and then. Plastic Pots: These days plastic pots are available in many sizes and shapes. They are the best for home garden but we should avoid them for our rooftop garden. Plastic pots are initially expensive but they are worthy in long run. They do not pose any problem of discolouration or breakage. They are very light in weight; hence shifting and rearranging are quite easy. They can be cleaned very easily and they do not put excessive load on the floor.

17

Cement Pots: These pots are quite heavy but the best part is they are available in many sizes and shapes, breakage is negligible and these can be painted either with cement colour or with enamel paint. For big plants and palms, cement pots are ideal as they are quite strong and heavy. However you have to be careful about their quality. These pots are made with cement and sand, ideal ratio is 1:6, but unscrupulous traders could sell pots up to ratio of 1:9. Fibreglass Pots: These pots and planters are good for hotels, offices and rooftop terraces. These can be manufactured according to specific requirement of length, width, height and thickness. Every such minute detail can be decided according to requirement. Apart from the above mentioned pots, we can use pots made out of wood, coco fibre and metals which can be used for various specific purposes.

18

GARDENING HABIT IN CHILDREN As parents and guardians, we must ensure that our children are positively encouraged to develop interest in gardening. To-day, children are more urbanised and accustomed to TV, mobile phones, video games and computers. Instead of spending time with nature, they are seated indoors hours together with multiple electronics gadgets. From time immemorial, human beings are used to live in the lap of nature with clay, soil and plants. Now with rapid urbanization and multi-storey apartment life culture, our children have no opportunity of coming close to nature and understand its various environmental features. Gardening as a hobby is very positive outlook; it brings us close to life and provides high degree of satisfaction. Meet some celebrated personalities /professionals who spend some time regularly in gardening and they will tell you how happy and satisfied they feel themselves. Now-a-days children are heavily burdened with their academic curriculum and stressed with competitions. If they spend some time with plants and nature they will be relieved of strain and stress and feel quite relaxed and satisfied. Allow children to play with plants; carry out experiments with plants right from germination, propagation, to regular nourishment. In due course, they will learn by themselves more about plants, bonsai, vegetation, flowers and fruits. Allow children to learn about some gardening tools and their application thereof. Do not resist nor discourage them even if they use your discarded containers and bottles. Do not get upset if some mess up at all there, rather encourage them with some positive stroke and clean them up. Take them to the countryside during weekend and allow them to talk to villagers and farmers. Let them see and learn as to how crops, vegetables and fruits are grown, take them to some orchard or nurseries also. Remember, botanical gardens are not always a very good choice as they may get frustrated with botanical nomenclatures or scientific terminologies and these may sometimes be counter productive. In 2009, researchers with the Mayo Clinic, USA conducted a study about children and gardening. Their goal was to find out if gardening helped change kids' eating habits. The study was prompted by the fact that children by and large do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. Kids who were in 4th to 6th grades, participated in the said program with astounding results. It turned out that growing their own food directly and positively affected kids' willingness to eat fruits and vegetables.

20

WATERING Watering is most important part of plant cultivation; water is a constituent of plant’s food and its value consist in dissolving nutritive salts and thus acting as a carrier of food to the roots of plants. Watering of indoor pot plants can be mastered with a little bit of knowledge and common sense. Water requirements of plants have been indicated against each plant illustrated in this book. Further, following tips would be highly beneficial for your expertise. • Water requirements are less during monsoon and winters, while during spring and summer plants demand enough water for growth. • Plants in sunny, dry and warm locations require more water. • Most of the plants do not like stagnation of water in soil, ensure bottom holes in pot over & above soil is porous to drain out of excess water. • Some plants love swamp or damp soil, we can leave these pots without bottom holes and always keep the soil wet. • Plants roots are generally 2 to 3 inches inside soil, so you must ensure that surroundings of root zone are damp. You can use an instrument generally called “soil moisture meter”. It is not very expensive and you should be able to get it in nearby garden shop. Most of the plants like to dry out in between watering, however swamp and water lover plants should always be kept in wet soil. • A large plant in a small pot will require more and frequent watering. • Water evaporates quicker from the sides of clay pots; therefore, water them frequently. • Succulents, Cactus, Zamia and Cycads etc. require less watering. • Seasonal flowers require moderate watering before bloom and sufficient watering during flowering.

19

IDEAL POTTING SOIL Most of us think that it is essential to have soil for the pots which is taken out from a field. This is not quite right. These days we are living in cities and it is difficult to obtain ground soil. Actually the potting soil or media in which plant grows must be porous enough for root aeration and at the same time capable of retaining sufficient water and nutrients. Care must be taken that excess water gets drained out as retention of excess water may cause roots rot. Main purpose of soil is to allow roots to spread freely and hold plant erect. Potting soil has a very broad definition; it includes many kinds of media which are suitable for growing plants. Depending on availability and necessity varying proportions of organic materials can be used like clay, sand, small pieces of pebbles, lime stone, calcined clay, peat moss, sphagnum moss, saw dust, shredded coconut husk, coco fibre dust (coco pith), farm yard manure, vermi-compost, animal wastes, composted hard wood bark, vermiculite, perlite, municipal compost, rice husk, pulses husk, leaf mould etc. With my experience over a decade, I have found that a mixture of field soil, coco pith and vermi-compost is excellent for most of the plants except cactus, succulents, orchids and air plants. Plants grown in my nursery are healthier and survive better at other locations. Therefore, I have no hesitation in recommending a mixture of coco pith and vermicompost for home gardeners! However, we should look around and find out what media is available in our vicinity and accordingly we should use them. Several brands of potting mix are available in packets and if suitable we can use them also. A word of caution, many of us have a tendency to mix our kitchen waste, spent tea leaves etc., which are detrimental to plants. They cause fungus infection to the plant. If we want to use these wastes, we must dry them first and then make compost.

21

MAINTAINING HUMIDITY

Humidity is essential almost for all plants, except cacti & succulents etc which can tolerate low levels of humidity. Average houses have low humidity especially where air-condition or heating units are used. It is better to have a hygrometer at home. It is not very expensive and shall help you to monitor humidity. Humidity level of 40% to 60% is ideal and comfortable for human health, whereas plants perform well when humidity is around 70%. When plants do not receive adequate humidity their growth becomes slower and leaves get brown tips. Here are some tips to increase humidity levels for your plants.

∗ We can increase humidity by misting plants during dry seasons. We can do fine spraying by using any kind of squirt bottles (such as those contain glass clearing liquids). We can even buy several types of sprayers having capacity of 500 ml to 2 litres, generally available in garden shops. ∗ Put some water and gravels in a shallow plate or tray and place pot plant on the gravels; ensure that water level does not touch the bottom of the pot. ∗ Place plants close to each other, each plant will give up moisture through transpiration and other plants will be benefitted. ∗ We can also buy small portable room humidifiers from market; they would be very useful during dry summers when humidity in the air drops down quite a lot. ∗ Ιn some parts of India Air Coolers are used in houses, plants can be kept inside room for some time during extreme hot and dry climate.

22

PROPER LIGHTING Lighting gives plant most of the energy for growth; however for indoor plants if we can provide brightness, it would suffice. Some indoor plants may require more lighting compared to others, following guidelines would help you. Effects of less lighting: ∗ Plants grow long and thin with long space between leaves. ∗ New leaves are smaller than existing ones. ∗ Lower leaves turn yellow and fall off. ∗ No growth or very slow growth. ∗ Flowering plants fail to bloom or bloom poorly. ∗ Leaves of variegated plants turn green. How to find suitable spots for indoor plants: Best location for indoor plants is balcony of a house where plants receive enough light and perhaps little sun also. Windowsills and space near windows are also good, where some light and air are available. We can place plants outside entrance also. Very often we like to place plants in such locations where sufficient light is not there; in that case we should shift plants to better lighted area in a cycle of six or seven days. House plants can be divided into three categories according to their requirement of light. Bright sun lightHouse plants like Croton, Coleus, Geranium, many succulents, bulbs and most of flowering plants require at least four hours of bright sunlight. These plants should be kept in sunny south window or balcony or at a place where they would receive at least four hours of sunlight. Moderate light Peperomia, Begonia, Ivy, Scindapsus, Maranta, Saintpaulia, etc. will thrive in filtered or defused sunlight. Place them in north facing window or in southern exposure. Low light Philodendrons, Aglaonemas, Sansevierias, Aspidistra, Schefflera, Ferns etc. prefer shade, so they can be placed at such places where direct sunlight may not be available.

23

FERTILIZING Plants require sixteen elements for complete growth. They are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, potassium, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sulphur, iron, zinc, molybdenum, boron, copper, manganese and chlorine. But home gardener should not bother about all these, since house plants live in low light conditions and require less fertilizer. Fertilizing should be under control as sometimes plants can overgrow their location.

As a thumb rule if you provide NPK during their growth period, it would suffice. N- Nitrogen for healthy foliage P- Phosphorous for root growth. K- Potassium for bigger and healthier fruits and flowers. Fertilizers should be applied during active growth period of the plant; however, when plant go for rest mode during winter, no need of applying fertilizers. Ideal time for applying fertilizers shall be spring, summer and monsoon. There are several types of fertilizers available in the market which can be divided in two groups, one is organic - made out of cow-dung, bone meal, organic compost etc. and the other one is chemical fertilizer made out of different formulations. Chemical fertilizers come normally in granular, powder and liquid form. According to Indian conditions, organic fertilizer is best suited for home garden as they are bulky and can make up for potting media. Vermi-compost is an ideal enriched media and should be used extensively. At some places we can use chemical fertilizers such as foliar sprays which are good and effective. Granulated SRF (Slow Release Fertilizer) are excellent for house plants as they are formulated to release their nitrogen at steady pace. SRF generally contain micro-nutrients along with NPK, they come in potency of three months to twelve months, therefore it will be ideal to apply 5gms (tea spoonful) in a medium pot around the root region in the soil.

24

AIR PURIFYING PLANT Although all plants purify air, but several research and studies in USA and Western world have come out with conclusive results that there are certain group of plants that purify air in a house by absorbing unhealthy particles in the air like trichloroethylene, benzene and formaldehyde. Research suggests that reducing pollutants in our homes can be as simple as purchasing a few houseplants. Some of them are mentioned below. However, plants provide a natural, cost effective way to clean indoor air and combat "sickbuilding syndrome". For example, in a 24-hour period, a spider plant can remove 80% of formaldehyde pollutants from an enclosed room.

PLANTS AS PER VASTU

Indian Vastu is the science of building and the art of balancing nature with man-made structures in such a manner which would allow human to get maximum benefit of nature's energy. Vastu gives some guidelines for plants in and around dwelling houses which are as follows: • •

• •

• • •

Tulsi (Basil) is an auspicious and potent plant; it is must for every home. It should be placed in North, East or North-East direction. Anar (Pomegranate), Dalchini (Cinnamon), Nariyal (Coconut), Asoka (Saraca indica, Saraca thaipingensis, Ashoka), Neem (Margosa), Bakul, Chameli, Kesar, Champa, Draksha (Grapes), Sal, Chandan, Ketki, Tal Makhani, Malti (Aganosma dichotoma ), Gulab (Rose) are good to plant inside and around the house. Creepers are good to be planted at entrance of the house, exteriors and on parapet boundary walls. However Money plants are also good inside the house. Except roses, thorny plants, cactus etc. are prohibited inside house. Small trees or plants up to 7-8 feet height should be planted in East and North sides. Large trees having wide canopy should be avoided, however there is no harm in having a row of tall palms that do not have large crowns. Huge trees should be planted in South or West of the house but care must be taken that sunlight up to the house should not be blocked. Trees having white latex, milk like liquid, should be avoided as they are inauspicious and not good for health. Fruit bearing trees like Mango, Banana, Jamun, Kathal (Jack fruit) are prohibited around a dwelling house. Thorn bearing plants like Babool, Ber etc. are also prohibited.

26

FENG SHUI PLANTS Feng shui is the ancient Chinese art of directing energy, and using feng shui with houseplants. The word itself literally translates into "wind" and "water.” These are the two life forces that flow freely over the Earth, creating the central life force known in Chinese as "chi". Thus, feng shui is concerned with directing chi, or energy, throughout a home to bring its occupants into harmony. Houseplants are an important part of this belief. Healthy houseplants are good and beneficial, especially wooded houseplants and bamboos. Wood represents creativity, birth, regeneration and affluence.

Feng Shui Tips • Mind the entrance: Front door is the beginning point in the journey of your home. It is where you welcome people, and where air circulates most freely. Place or hang plants near the front entrance whenever possible. • Workplace: Plants in the office and workplace also bring about increased luck in your career. Place plants in the east, south or south-east corners of your office for maximum luck.

• Disguise harsh lines: Slopes, ceilings, corners and other sharp lines are considered negative energy enhancers because they stop the flow of chi through a house. Use plants to hide these architectural features of your house and enhance air flow between rooms and through "dead" spaces.

27

FENG SHUI Don't keep dead orPLANTS dying plants: Dead or dying plants emit negative energy and should be discarded. This applies to cut flowers also. In general, flowers are good for the home, but declining bouquets should be discarded. • Keep herbs in the home: The Chinese often burn herbs after an argument or other disruptive event to purify the home. Growing herbs are also beneficial and should be kept in the home. Lavender in particular is powerful herb as it is widely considered to promote relaxation and peace. • Avoid thorny Plants: Thorny plants form a protective barrier, thus stopping the flow of chi. Do not place thorny plants inside your home. Thorny plants do form a protective shield, and could be placed outside the home. Don't place them near the front door, rather could be placed a little further away from the door, or in the balcony. • Recommended Plants: Any healthy plant can help increase a home's chi or be used in feng shui designs. However, some plants are more beneficial than others, and wooded plants are considered the best of all. Here are some great plants to consider: ü ü ü ü ü ü

ü

Bamboo:- Any variety of bamboo is good, even lucky bamboo (which technically known as Dracaena sanderiana) Palms Dracaena:- There are many species of dracaena, some of which form thick, wooded stalks. Peace lilies. Jade plants. Ficus species:- There are many species of ficus including rubber plants and the weeping fig. These are beneficial plants in fact, Buddha achieved enlightenment while sitting beneath a ficus tree. Hanging plants:- Baskets are great for moving chi throughout a room and near the ceiling.

28

PRUNING Periodical pruning of house plants will keep them in good shape. It will keep them compact, dense and healthy. Some suckering plants may require removal of plantlets and new suckers to maintain their health and shape. Following tips will help in this direction: ∗ Remove broken, dead and weak branches. Also remove pale and yellowing leaves. ∗ You should prune when the plant is in a stage of active growth so that it can recover quickly and look healthy again. ∗ Make cut just above a node (a node is a place where leaf of a plant joins the stem). ∗ Vining plants produce trailing stems which can become lanky and leggy with long gaps between leaves. You can pinch off the growing tips with your thumb and forefinger; this will encourage plant to put out new bushier growth. ∗ Flowering plants should be pruned immediately on flowering season is over. In case of creepers which flower during spring and summer, pruning should be done in winter. ∗ If you like to have bushy plants, Ficus benjamina, F. kingbush, F. Nitida, F. starlite, Duranta, Pedilanthas, Alternanthera, Arelia, Murrya etc. are a few name worth mentioning. ∗ Some suckering and basal growth plants will look better if their new plantlets and excess suckers are removed, like Sansevieria, Agave, Rhoeo, Cryptanthus and Aloe vera.

29

PROPAGATION This chapter may not be very useful as most of the home gardeners may not have time, skill and patience for propagation. However, I have decided to include it in brief, as sometimes it could be very useful to multiply plant to cover more area and also to gift friends and relatives. Leaf cuttings:- Any plant with fleshy petioles (leaf stems) such as Pepperomia, Sansevieria, Zamiacalcus Zamifolia, Kalanchoe can provide leaf cuttings. Using a clean sharp knife, cut off a healthy leaf at the point where it joins the stems. Insert the petiole in moist rooting medium. Place the leaf at an angle so that new plants developing at the base will not be shaded from the sunlight. Cover the pot and place in diffused daylight until growth appears. Another method is used for plants with fleshy veined leaves like begonias- take a matured leaf, make slits in the heavy primary veins from the underside with a sharp blade, lay the leaf on a moist media with front side up. Put some small pebbles on the leaf so that it maintains contact with soil. Stem Cutting:- Choose a sturdy stem, it should not be too tender or too hard. Cut about a 10 cm long stem, just 5mm below the leaf, remove the leaf from the bottom side of the stem, leave about 4 to 5 leaves at top, insert the cutting into a moist media. Ensure that leaves do not touch the media. Keep them in shaded, warm and humid area, you can also cover the pot and the cutting with a polythene bag like a balloon to maintain constant humidity. Cuttings will root more rapidly if dipped in rooting hormone before putting into the media. Some cuttings can be rooted in water like Ivy, Philodendron, Coleus, Geranium, Syngonium, and Scindapsus. Divisions: - Any plant with many stems rising from the soil, or which develops multiple crowns, can be propagated by division; Ferns, Clivia, Aspidistra, Chlorophytum, Sansevieria, Calathea, Rhaphis, Alpinia, Ribbon grass, Aloe vera and clumping palms are a few examples. Remove the plant from the pot, shake off the soil and wash it under running water. Some plants can be pulled apart, but others you may separate by cutting down through the crown with a sharp knife. Each section will need some root and a section of crown. Re-pot each division.

30

Runners:- Plants such as Strawberry, Chlorophytum and Espiscia send out long horizontal shoots from the crown of the plant. At the tip of the runner small plantlets develop which can be rooted as new plants. Lead a runner to the top of a soil filled pot and fix it to the soil with a hairpin or piece of wire. When roots form in two to three weeks, cut the runners off. Offsets: - Offsets are branches developing from the base or trunk of a parent plant and clustering around the original plant. These can be cut off close to the stem and treated as cuttings. They will develop roots if inserted in moist rooting media and kept in a warm, humid location. Offsets develop on Bromeliads, Sansevierias, Agaves, and Cycas. Rhizomes & Bulbs: - Rhizomes, bulbs, potatoes, ginger are some tumors which develop underground and these can be very easily used for reproduction of plants; you just bury them inside a pot and keep a small part of it outside so that they get some light and don't come under fungal attack. Generally plants out of these tumors will perish after winter, they will reproduce during monsoon. Node Cuttings:- Some plants can be reproduced and multiplied from the nodes of its stem. There are soft stem type plants which include Dieffenbachia, Dracaena, Aglaonema and Philodendron. Seeds: - Generally we think that we can grow plant with seed, but it is not so always, only certain mature, potent seeds duly pollinated can be used for germination. Another factor is that plants coming out of seeds may not yield same quality of fruit and flower as the mother plant possessed. Propagation in vegetation world is a very vast subject and for which a few volumes may be written. I have just mentioned some easy method without touching other reproduction systems like air layering, ground layering, grafting, tissue culture, and budding.

31

TOOLS & IMPLEMENTS

Keep some basic tools and implements handy. If you have necessary tools you will never feel lazy to attend to your plants. It is a good idea to have a cupboard exclusively for tools, implements, fertilizers, pesticides and other gardening items which you may require from time to time. A big range of tools and implements are available in the market. Assess your requirement before buying. You may not require many items, some basic tools and implements may be good enough for you. From the following list you can select items which may be essential for you:

32

HANGING PLANTS Now a days we have very limited space in apartments, but more of accessories and furniture. Finding floor space for pots have also become difficult. As a plant lover, you can still find out some room for hanging plants all around the house, especially at the balcony, patio, breeze ways, windows etc. Hanging plants enhance decor and ambience of a house and surroundings. They create a very soothing and healthy atmosphere. Many types of pots and baskets are available in market which can be easily used for hanging plants. You can also make one by way of tying three or four wires, chains or ropes to any pot with a diameter of 10 - 25 cm. Pots made out fibre glass, ceramic, terraporcelain will be ideal, it is better to use shallow pots. Ensure that at least two numbers of holes are there for draining out excess water. If you want to make yourself free from daily watering, you may go for water loving plants and use pots without draining hole. As far as possible potting media should be light and humus. Hanging pot plants may require frequent watering as they have more transpiration compared to other pot plants. There are number of plants which can be easily grown on hanging pots. However, you must make selection of plants based upon the availability of sunlight at the particular location. Plants which would spread sideways and downwards will make an impressive impact. Some ideal plants for hanging around are Ipomea, Zebrina pendula, Hedera helix, Calassia repens, Cenocia, Pepperomia, Waedelia, Russelia, Scindepsis and many more.

33

WATER LOVING PLANTS

Water loving plants are fun and interesting. You need not water them daily and do not need to bother about excess watering also. No need for draining holes or worrying about any potting media. They are ideal to be kept outside entrance, patio and balconies. They look splendid and wonderful especially when tall plants are potted in big pots and vessels. Big ceramic, porcelain, cement, terra-cotta pots are ideal, preferably over 45 cm height and about 30 cm wide. For smaller plants you may use pots made of glass fibre. A lot of plants will be shown happy just with water and without soil; some plants may require muddy soil or swamp. It is good to change water every seven to ten days. You would be amazed to know that there are several plants which grow well in swamp; even some palms like Red palm, Nypa fruticans, Licuala spinosa, Licuala paludosa, Phoenix paludosa, Phoenix roebelinii and Oil palm can live in swamp. You can add some small dose of liquid NPK in water periodically and use foliar spray to leaves in every two/three weeks for best results. You can have very interesting experiments with some plant cuttings and rooting them in water. Begonia, Cissus, Coleus, Cordyline, Ficus, Hedera, Impatiens, Philodendron, Scindapsus, Syngoniam, Draecena are some varieties which can survive and root in fresh water. You may even use your discarded bottles. The water should be kept clean and well aerated at a bright location out of direct sunlight.

34

ROOF TOP TERRACE GARDENING Terrace gardening may look simple, but is a highly technical subject. To have a proper garden on rooftop terrace, prime requirement is having a solid and high standard of three layers of water proofing at the time of construction of building. Most of the buildings are not built with such special waterproofing and sometimes load bearing capacity of terrace may not be sufficient for heavy loaded pots and it may cause damage to the construction in long run. Following tips will help you while considering an average roof gardening:

•Pot plants are the best way of greening your rooftop terrace. Some creepers, hanging plants, flowering and ornamental plants can give a splendid look. •Use high density media like perlite, peat moss, coco-pith and vermi-compost as far as possible. •Avoid placing heavy trees with large crowns. Some varieties of Ficus may penetrate their roots dangerously. •Avoid putting too many pots in a cluster as there can be a chance of stagnation of water underneath, this may result in formation of algae causing floor slippery and increase chance of seepage of water through the concrete. •Fibreglass, clay, terra-porcelain, strong HDPE barrels and cement pots are ideal for a rooftop terrace. It is advisable that pots should be kept on stands or racks. •By the side of boundaries, you can place single stem palms like Foxtail and Carpentaria in big cement pots or HDPE barrels. •Only full sun lover plants should be placed on a rooftop. If you like to keep semi shade loving plants, consider covering up the terrace with fibreglass sheets or with 50% or 75% Agro Shade Nets. While buying Agro Shade Nets, ensure they are UV stabilised so that they may last for 3-4 years without any hassle. •It is a good idea to have some poles, pillars with cross sections for climbers and hanging plants. •Nolina, Adenium, Euphorbia, Agave, Furcraea, Cycad, Zamia, Succulents, Cactus, Palms, Tulsi, Ajwain, Curry leaf, Aloe-vera, Pedilenthus, Bougainvilleas, seasonal flowers are some of the plants which would surely do well on terrace.

35

PLANT DISEASE & CURE Most common disease in house plant is fungal. This results in infection and rotting of leaves, stem and roots. Main reason for fungal attack is either too much of moisture at the roots or too much humidity in the atmosphere. If you notice a fungal attack, use a fungicide around the affected area either by dusting or by spraying. Insects and pests are not a major problem for house plants, but occasionally mealy bug, red spider, mites, snails and scales do attack house plants. You can wipe them off with a wet cloth if infestation is limited. In case of widespread attack, you should use suitable insecticide which you can buy from any garden shops/centres or an agro shop.

Cypermethrin 5% EC

Whenever you notice a fungal attack or infestation of pest or insect, first of all isolate that plant from others so that spreading is avoided. It is better to take plant outside the house when applying fungicide or insecticide. You must keep plant medicines always out of the reach of children. Neem based formulations are highly recommended to counter pests and insects.
