Brief Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Paul. I am a native of the San Francisco Bay Area but, have been living in Raleigh, NC for over 15 years now. What motivates me are my passions: cycling, backpacking, photography, guitar, reading, sketching, fly fishing, motorcycles, and travel. My outlook on the practice of Landscape Design and Architecture was formulated at the tutelage of former NCSU professor Will Hooker who emphasized holistic ecological sensitivity, permicultre design, and systems integration. The NCSU MLA program enhanced these lessons adding triple bottom line principles to my designs that are supported through extensive research and performance metrics. Current conditions of pedestrian / vehicular circulation
North Carolina State UniversityÃĸ€™s North Campus sits within the setting of an established residential neighborhood in downtown Raleigh NC. Unfortunately, a number of years ago, the university permanently closed off access to the front entrance to the library, creating an unintended sense of restriction and privacy. It is the aim through this project to reimagine a landmark entrance into North Campus with a design that restores the connection between neighborhood residence and campus life.

We were tasked with designing a multifunctional neighborhood // office space community park. The main programing of the park came predefined by the clients and stakeholders. Our team utilized the siteÃĸ€™s existing conditions and external context to inform the relationships between the spaces in between the park and the connections to the periphery. The site is located in a rapidly growing urban fringe; strengthening the ecological relationship was a major strategy for the success of the design.

Determining the Ãĸ€œheartÃĸ€? of the site for the main entrance into the park became the focal point in which the programmatic elements and circulation were arranged. Incorporating alternative entrances at the periphery allows for varied experiences for people with all types of abilities. The Great Lawn and stormwater retention areas at the low points of the site treat water and provide ecological services and habitat. Ultimately, this design allows for flexibility in its uses and users, providing spaces that activate the park throughout the year.

This site is uniquely positioned as a node for three adjacent typologies: academic life, neighborhood community, and the natural environment, all of which were taken in consideration for activating the space. North Carolina State University was in search of expanding existing programs on site, establishing a stronger relationship to the neighborhood, and enhancing the experience with the surrounding natural elements. The design focused on enriching the daily use by providing spaces for multiple activities and perennial events hosted by North Carolina State University. The edge conditions use a strategy that pulls each of the three typologies into the site, blending harmoniously together seamlessly. LAKE VIEWING DECK
North Carolina State University partners and stakeholders are intrigued by the opportunities offered by this site and its location. Mostly an open lawn, a variety of activities are frequented here. Students and residents use it mostly for a sporting field, but North Carolina State University has successfully held it as a music venue. ItÃĸ€™s adjacency to Lake Raleigh gives the space a beautiful backdrop to any occasion. The stakeholders realize how under appreciated this space is and ask for a design that embellishes existing activities and provides alternative programmatic elements such as park entrances, plants and furnishings. This design responds to lifestyles of its users by extending and offering areas for leisure and celebration, sport and respite.

Our work on this design was a continuation of previous master plans from past semesters and is the final installment of the NCSU campus Triad / Syme Hall Residence Hall corridor. The process for this design involved strategies coincided with the overall guidelines from existing NCSU master plan studies. Our declaration was to also successfully develop and document a SITES certified design, whereupon approval, would be the 1st on campus and 4th in the state of North Carolina. It is worth mentioning our success was not altered due to the pandemic Covid-19 and that our resourceful response only strengthened the ingenuity required to fulfill our declaration. South Honor, respect, and representation are the main themes in this enhancement South Park Parkproject of an existing community center in the heart of downtown Raleigh, NC. The concept of the design is about uplifting the history and culture of the South Park residence as an implacable identity of African-American contribution. The landscape is an invitation that both Context invokes curiosity through artifact and self reflection by means of exposure.Context Conditions of the site enabled a cohesive division of these interpretations, affording physical metaphors for the story and experience of the South Park heritage. Visioning inclusivity and embodied empowerment inspired this city museum and neighborhood park.

Raleigh Demographics This map displays proximity of Public schools (with Âŧ mile buffer bubbles) that surround the Top Greene Center and Chavis Park. These schools are well within a walking distance from the proposed Heritage Walk, where the Top Greene Center would act as the epicenter for educational experiences and outdoor activates.

Circulation Systems
Above tallies the upward trend of young (25-35 years old) groups of people in Raleigh and compares the statistics with the rest of NC. We are seeing an increase of this age group relocating within the downtown area. This age group is also associated with new or young families, making the importance of school facilities and safe neighborhoods an important need.

Raleigh Population by Race
Crime Statistics Police Reports (Feb-Sept 2020)
Recent (*Feb-Sept 2020) criminal activity as reported by NIBRS (National Incident Based Reporting System) and the Raleigh Police Department, is highlighted by the red crosses. Note the concentration of crimes being reported are clustered around Moore Square (*possibly in relation to the Bus Depot) and dotted along bus routes. South Park shows very little reports. Statistics on Raleighâs population by race between 2000 and 2017 can be seen in the chart in the lower left corner. White population has gone down 6.5% and Black or African American population has risen 1.4%. In this 7-year study, Raleighâs population rose by 188,879 people (a ~40% increase).

This academic project essentially re-opened an investigation toward solving an under-appreciated communityâs request for adequately funding and developing a dignified neighborhood cultural / community center. Alternative projects studied for contextual research, (primarily the Heritage Walk Project), informed the concept for the design. Civic engagement was greatly appreciated during the process and helped refine the programmatic elements of the landscape. Emphasis placed on the âTriple Bottom Lineâ drove the functionality and usability of spaces, centered on ways that educate, preserve, and memorialize. These findings and this design communicate a practical solution for investing in the ongoing efforts of the South Park community.

The concept for this design was two-fold, to reinvent the site as a neighborhood anchor for the South Park community and to establish it as a trail head for the Heritage Walk Project. Through a landscape that honors the artifacts and intrigues curiosity, a civic-like language was utilized to enhance the formalized introduction to the center. Movement through the site is designed to educate, preserve, and memorialize the stories and history of the South Park community. The site is flexible with space enough for educational classes, neighborhood celebrations, private catered events and small pop-up markets; acting as both a neighborhood park and city museum.
