WELCOME to our production of Cabaret. We are thrilled to have you here tonight to witness this incredible musical and to be part of this special moment with us. Our cast and crew have been working tirelessly to bring you a performance that will transport you to another time and place. From the stunning choreography, directing and the music, to the dazzling costumes and sets, every detail has been crafted with care to create an unforgettable experience.

At its heart, Cabaret is a story about love, loss, and the pursuit of happiness. But it is also a story that addresses themes of discrimination that were prevalent during the time in which it is set, and sadly continue to persist today. It is our hope that this production will not only entertain you but also inspire you to reflect on the importance of acceptance and understanding in our world. Innately, we all know that every human being deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. In the face of hatred and intolerance, we must stand together and celebrate our diversity as a strength, not a weakness. It is only through empathy and compassion that we can build a better future for ourselves and for generations to come.

As we begin this journey tonight, we invite you to open your hearts and minds, to embrace the messages of love and hope that this production embodies, and to join us in our commitment to creating a more just and equitable world for all. This current show is hopefully our last one in this contraption and make-shift black-box we have fabricated to accommodate our seasons over the previous two years, as we await the completed gift of 3 new theatre spaces. This progress could not have been possible without your support. DIRECTOR & CHOREOGRAPHER

STEPHEN BROTEBECK is a Professor in the MFA Musical Theatre program at SDSU where he has directed and choreographed numerous productions including Postcard American Town (World Premiere), Steel Pier, Pippin, James and the Giant Peach, The Full Monty and The Drowsy Chaperone (Craig Noel Award Nomination). Mr. Brotebeck was most recently the Artistic Director of the Okoboji Summer Theatre in Okoboji, IA, where he directed and choreographed A Comedy of Tenors, An Inspector Calls, Grease, Clue: On Stage, Gods of Comedy, Mary Poppins, Murder On The Orient Express, and The Spitfire Grill among others. Broadway: Ghost, Peter and the Starcatcher (Movement Associate). As a director Mr. Brotebeck has helmed the Off and Off-Off Broadway productions of The Shark Play, Breaking The Shakespeare Code, St. Francis (NY Fringe – Excellence in Directing Award), The Maltese Walter, Greasemonkey and Scenes from a Balcony. Cabaret’s Setting

Our story is set in the 1920s and 1930s in Berlin, Germany, right after World War I (1914-1918). Germany was governed by The Weimar Republic from 1919 to 1933, in the period after WWI until the rise of Nazi Germany. In WWI, three million people died. Due to the war, Germany incurred a lot of debt, which led to hyperinflation in the 1920s. There is a famous story that people burned their paper bills (German marks) because they were worth more as fuel than as money. In 1929, one-fourth of the German population lost their jobs. In this terrible economy, people could not trust anything and started questioning what they should believe.

Berlin was known as a place full of cultural diversity. Many immigrants and tourists were visiting Berlin. There were immigrants from Russia and Jewish people living throughout Europe. Even before Hitler became Chancellor in 1933, antisemitism existed in daily life. Jews were targets of insults, intimidation, boycotts of Jewish-owned businesses, propaganda, lies, and anti-Jewish demonstrations. In Cabaret, many characters talk about whether other people are Jews or Germans; the classification does matter a lot to them.

Berlin, especially Nollendorfplatz, was also known as a gay-friendly area. In the 1930s, Nollendorfplatz was a center of entertainment and culture, home to artists and writers. At this time, being gay was considered illegal and hundreds of gay men were convicted and sent to prison every year in Germany. Although, there were some gay rights movements happening too. The Institute for Sexual Science was founded in 1919 and was the world’s first institution studying the science of sexuality. Even though there was censorship, there were some gay and lesbian magazines published and some films about gay couples screened.

Ironically, despite the difficult economic times, the culture of the time was very decadent and rich. Expressionism, which is one of the most well-known art styles whose goal is to express interior feelings, started in Germany and was established during this time. There were a lot of “cultural hustlers” who sought to escape from the terrible social situation. Berlin had a thriving nightlife full of bars and cabarets. There were between 65 and 80 gay bars and 50 lesbian bars in the capital alone.

Production History of Cabaret

The musical Cabaret is based on the play I am a Camera (1951) staged by John Van Druten, which was based on the novel, Goodbye to Berlin (1939), a semi-autobiographical novel written by Christopher Isherwood. The novel was written 100 years ago but is still relevant to our society today. Cabaret premiered in 1966 and has had revivals in 1987, 1998, and 2014. There was a famous film adaptation made in 1972, directed by Bob Fosse and starring Liza Minnelli.

Cabaret has been performed again and again because it remains relevant. Every time a revival is on stage, it has different song lists and is revised a lot. Most notably, the original production does not have any suggestion that Cliff may be gay or bisexual. In this revised 1987 version, his bisexuality is implied, and in the 1998 version, he is clearly gay or bisexual.

Even though the musical Cabaret was written several decades ago, the issues faced by characters in Cabaret are still relevant to our society today. In Cabaret, two of our characters react in opposite ways to the changes happening in the society around them. What can you do when you see society is going in the wrong direction? Or what should you do?

DRAMATURG

A IKA TSUDA is a first-year MA Theatre Arts student at SDSU. Aika received her bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in Translation at Kobe College in Japan. She studied theatre abroad for one year at Bowling Green State University in Ohio during her time at Kobe College. Her interests are in musical theatre and translation in the theatre field. As she seeks to work as a translator in the musical theatre field in the future, she is interested in exploring the differences between American and Japanese theatre. Last semester, she worked on The Long Christmas Ride Home as a co-dramaturg and this is her second time working on a production at SDSU. She is excited to be a part of this production.

SCENIC DESIGNER

M ATHYS HERBERT‘s scenic design credits include Putnam County Spelling Bee, In the Heights, Catch Me If You Can, Rent, A Christmas Story, Sister Act, Freaky Friday, Young Frankenstein, and Bring It on with San Diego Musical Theatre as well as Cabaret (Associate Designer - Cygnet Theatre) and Million Dollar Quartet (Lamb’s Players). Originally from Dayton Ohio, he holds a BFA in Acting from Wright State University and is currently working on his MFA in Scenic Design at SDSU.

COSTUME DESIGNER

C LAIRE PETERSON is a second year costume design MFA candidate at SDSU. She is thrilled to be designing the costumes for this year’s mainstage musical, Cabaret. Born and raised in Montana, she grew up loving theatre and the arts. This led her to get a BFA in Theatre from the University of Montana in Missoula, where she found her true passion: costume design. Her previous costume designs at SDSU include A Raisin in the Sun, and SDSU’s Opera Theatre production of L’Amant Anonyme. Other credits include: The Sound of Music and A Year with Frog and Toad at Grandstreet Theatre, The Fog at the Montana Repertory Theatre, and Spring Awakening at the University of Montana. She would like to thank her family and friends for supporting her, along with all the technicians and people behind the scenes who helped this design come to life. LIGHTING DESIGNER

A LLY WOOD is in her third and final year at SDSU where she will receive her MFA in Design and Technology: Emphasis in Lighting and Projections. She graduated from Georgia College & State University in 2018 with a BA in Theatre. Her most recent lighting designs include The Children at the Moxie, Everyday Dances, Horizons, and Everyday Dances II at the Malashock Dance Company in San Diego; as well as Free Play Project and She Kills Monsters at SDSU. She also designed projections for Bloodletting at SDSU. Ally would like to dedicate her work on this project to her newborn niece, Veronica Shannon Roddy.

PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER

D J MALONEY is a fourth year Theatre Arts major with an emphasis on Stage Management. He is a transfer student at SDSU. This will be DJ’s seventh year stage managing and his 24th show called professionally and academically. This will also be DJ’s final show called here at SDSU before he graduates this coming May. Prior credits include stage management for Acey Deucey Club with Fever Productions, Henry V, Into the Woods, Working: the Musical, Importance of Being Earnest at Mira Costa College, and A Raisin in the Sun, Postcard American Town, Love’s Labor’s Lost at SDSU. DJ will be attending UC Irvine this coming fall and will be working towards his MFA in Stage Management on a full ride offer! Wilfred Paloma (Emcee)

Wilfred is an Actors’ Equity Association member with an M.A. in Theatre Arts from San Diego State University and a B.A. in Theatre Performance; graduate of the MCIT Acting Studio. Acting credits: Light Years Away (La Jolla Playhouse), Eightysixed (Diversionary Theatre), O Wondrous Night (SeaWorld) and A Semicolon is a Double (Scripps Ranch Theatre). Directing credits include: Kasama (Southwestern College), Potion (Moxie Theatre), and School of Rock (Junior Theatre). Choreographer highlights: Hunchback of Notre Dame (Junior Theatre), Lion King Jr. (Young Actors’ Theatre), Shrek & Newsies (Academy of Our Lady of Peace), and Hall Pass (Blindspot Collective). Wilfred is an Adjunct Professor at Grossmont College & Southwestern College. Wilfred directs & facilitates applied theatre projects centering LGBTQIA+ issues, racial justice, & youth advocacy. Lindsey Grant (Sally)

Lindsey was born and raised in San Diego. She received her BFA from NYU Tisch School Of The Arts and is currently an MFA Candidate in Musical Theatre at San Diego State University. Lindsey has performed in numerous productions both on the East and West Coasts, including the roles of The Drowsy Chaperone in The Drowsy Chaperone and Eve in Children Of Eden. Other credits include: Netflix Stranger Things Experience, Jerry’s Girls (Dolly Levi), Spelling Bee (Logainne Schwartzy). Lindsey has also directed main stage productions for youth theatres in San Diego and has enjoyed teaching acting courses for both youth and undergraduate students. Lindsey is thrilled to be playing the part of Sally Bowles – truly a dream role!

Zakk Mannella (Cliff)

Zakk is proud to be a part of the MFA in Musical Theatre Class of 2024. Originally from Pittsburgh, he is a performer, educator, choreographer, and director that has worked professionally across the east coast. He is currently a teaching associate at SDSU where he teaches Musical Theatre Dance. Recent credits include: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (SDSU - Mitch), Legally Blonde (Choreographer), Newsies (Albert), West Side Story (Riff), Side Show (Buddy), Into the Woods (Director), Peter and the Starcatcher (Ted), and American Idiot (Choreographer). He is an Equity Membership Candidate, and received his BA in Theatre Arts/Musical Theatre from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. He is thrilled that he has been awarded the opportunity to further his education at SDSU, and wanted to take the time to thank the generous scholarship donors that made his education possible. Justin Brill (Herr Schultz)

Justin is a current MFA Musical Theatre student. In the fall you may have seen him with a “magic foot” as Barfée in Spelling Bee for SDSU. Prior to coming to SDSU, he spent a decade in Chicago performing, directing, and teaching at the college level. Professional performing credits: Broadway (All Shook Up, Rent, High Fidelity), National Tours (Wicked, Beauty and the Beast), Las Vegas sit downs (Mamma Mia, Spamalot), The Metropolitan Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Madison Square Garden’s A Christmas Carol, regional theatre (Milwaukee Rep, Indiana Rep, Florida Stage, Alabama Shakespeare Festival), and summer stock (Pittsburgh CLO, Music Theatre of Wichita). Justin is a certified yoga instructor and infuses all of his classes with mindfulness practice. He is passionate about moving musical theatre education forward toward a more holistic experience that develops the artist’s awareness of the creative practice as skills are honed and developed. Use your power and privilege to advocate for those whose voices are excluded from the conversation. We cannot allow history to repeat itself. For Scrappy.

Natalie McClure (Fraulein Schneider)

Natalie McClure is an MFA in Musical Theatre candidate and is thoroughly excited to be performing and collaborating with all of the amazing talent at SDSU. She recently performed as Rona Lisa Peretti in SDSU’s production of Spelling Bee in the fall. Natalie holds a BFA in Musical Theatre Performance from Western Michigan University. She has performed in the Broadway sit-down of Mamma Mia! in Las Vegas; multiple roles in regional theaters across the US; in tv/films; and in national commercials for Labatts, 1-800 Contacts, Nike, Bissell and more. One of her favorite projects was starting an all female production team in New York where she created, produced, and starred in an award winning web series called Kid Friendly*. Milo Mee (Ernst Ludwig /Schultz Understudy)

Milo Mee is a second year at SDSU majoring in Theater Performance. Some of his most recent roles have been Vice Principal Panch in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (SDSU), Dom in Steel Pier (SDSU), Cole in The Free Play Project (SDSU), Mr. Lindner in A Raisin In the Sun (SDSU), Amos Hart in Chicago (CMTSJ), Patrick Star in The Spongebob Musical (CMTSJ), and the Minister, Grandmother, Grandfather, and Dancer in The Long Christmas Ride Home (SDSU). Milo was awarded Best Actor in the 2021 California High School Rita Moreno Awards, where he went on to represent the Bay Area at the Broadway League’s annual Jimmy Awards. He is so excited to perform alongside such a talented cast and hopes you enjoy the show.

Van Angelo (Bobby)

Van Angelo (they/them) is a proud graduate of Westminster Choir College and a current MFA in Musical Theatre candidate here at SDSU. Van currently serves as the Director of Education for San Diego Musical Theatre, and as a Teaching Artist for Moonlight Youth Theatre and New Village Arts. Recently Van was Leaf Coneybear in last semester’s production of Spelling Bee. Favorite regional credits include Wes in The View UpStairs (Desert Rose Playhouse), Seaweed in Hairspray (Performance Riverside), Benny in In the Heights (Temecula Valley Players), and Wickersham #1 in Seussical (Candlelight Pavilion). Van has served as a Music Director for works at San Diego Musical Theatre, New Village Arts, Moonlight Youth Theatre, San Diego State University, and Val Verde Unified. Sarah Salonga (Lulu)

Sarah Jane (she/her) is thrilled to be part of the Kit Kat Klub! She is currently pursuing an MFA in Musical Theatre here at SDSU and has a BA in Education and BSc in Biochemistry. Sarah is a credentialed elementary school teacher and has taught voice, ukulele, dance, and theater to students of all ages. In addition, Sarah is a Registered Dental Hygienist and loves to apply her knowledge in dentistry to vocal pedagogy and singing. Some of her favorite credits include: Olive Ostrovsky in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Melanie in lit: a new musical, Pocahontas in Disenchanted! and Anna in High Fidelity (Canadian Premiere). JJ Eccles (Max /Ernst Understudy)

JJ is a third-year double major in Theater - Performance and Television, Film, and New Media - Production here at San Diego State University and is excited to once again take the stage and put on a great show. His recent credits include Sir Nathaniel in last semester’s performance of Love’s Labor’s Lost and Cinesias in Lysistrata. He would like to thank his mother for always being there for him and encouraging him to chase his dreams at every turn. He is thrilled to join his incredibly talented cast and crew in telling this impactful story and hopes the audience will not only enjoy it, but will take something away from it as well.

Sierra Goria (Rosie)

Sierra is in her third-year here at SDSU pursuing her BA in Theatre Arts Performance. She currently works at Legoland California as a Singer and Dancer. Sierra was a nominee and participant in the 2019 Broadway San Diego Awards. Some of her favorite credits include Heathers (Heather Duke), Spring Awakening (Wendla), Chicago (Velma Kelly), The Little Mermaid (Ursula), and The Wizard of Oz (Scarecrow). This is her third Main Stage Production with San Diego State, most recently seen in the Filipino play Bloodletting (LeeLee). She is overjoyed about being able to perform in Cabaret with such a beautiful and talented cast, crew, and creative team. Danny Holmes (Victor/Cliff Understudy)

Danny Holmes (he/him) is a second year Theater-Performance major at SDSU and is thrilled to be a part of one of his favorite shows. Cabaret has always been a dream show of his and he has been SO excited to start ever since the audition call was announced. Danny has performed in such shows as Chicago (Billy Flynn), Little Shop of Horrors (Seymour), Steel Pier (ensemble), Heathers (Kurt), and The Last Five Years (Jamie). Being a part of this incredible ensemble of people was so rewarding and remember “We’re alive! And what good is it alone?”

Kylie Stucki (Texas/Sally Understudy)

Kylie Stucki is a sophomore here at SDSU, and she is excited to be part of such a historic musical! You may recognize them from the fall’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, or the previous fall’s Steel Pier. After 16 years of dance training, 12 years of competitive studio dance, and a year of teaching beginner hip hop and junior contemporary, she took to the choreographers chair. While a part of Tesoro High School’s Titanium, she was awarded “Best Choreography” two years in a row at the ICHSAs. Kylie guest choreographed for the current Titanium team, who recently won ICHSA Semifinals and is off to Finals in New York! When she’s not dancing, which is rare, she is singing along to her favorite swing/jazz music. She trained with a choir directed by Grammy Award winning Keith Hancock. Through that program she was able to perform with Jason Mraz, for Quentin Tarantino, and in front of hundreds of Clippers fans singing the National Anthem. Michael Flores (Herman/Emcee Understudy)

Michael Christopher Flores is a Theatre Arts (Performance) major and is currently in his last semester at San Diego State University. Michael most recently served as the Assistant Director for the first musical reading of Ziggy Stardust & Me under the direction of Dani Bedau, and last semester was the Assistant Choreographer for the mainstage production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. While at SDSU, Michael directed and choreographed for SDSU’s Musical Theatre Club; including productions of Heathers The Musical, and an abridged musical staging of 35MM: A Musical Exhibition as part of MTC’s Senior Exhibitions. As a performer, Michael spent last summer with Teatro San Diego as part of their dance company. Michael was last seen on the mainstage in SDSU’s production of Steel Pier. Ethan Cruz (Hans)

Ethan Cruz is in his second year and beyond excited to be performing on the SDSU Mainstage once again. Theatre has always been in his corner and has provided a specific understanding allowing him to thrive socially and professionally. Past performances include Marathon Dancer in Steel Pier (SDSU Mainstage), Bitter Geek in Heathers (SDSU MTC), and Idle Boy in 35MM (SDSU MTC). When he isn’t slaying for the audience, he can be found cheffing it up in the kitchen, drinking boba, and, more often than not, getting some much-needed rest. He is so grateful for the opportunity to be part of this wonderful piece of art, especially in our current social climate. He wants everyone to remember: lead with love, compassion, and understanding that we’re all here to serve each other and help communities thrive and grow. Jordan Davenport (Frenchie)

Jordan is a first year at SDSU and is very excited to be in her first ever main stage musical! She didn’t know she’d get this far, but she’s appreciative nonetheless. Jordan is a nerd who loves anime, video games, and all kinds of music. She wants to thank her parents, her brothers, her best friends, and everyone else who has supported and aided her in her dreams of performing. Charlotte Bridant (Helga/Schneider Understudy)

Charlotte Bridant is a first-year Youth Theatre major who is thrilled to be working with this amazing cast in her first mainstage production at SDSU! She gained her love for theater at 5 years old after seeing a production of Seussical the Musical and has been doing theater ever since. She has been a part of many shows (mostly musicals) with Roustabout Theater in Santa Rosa, CA. Some of her credits include Gypsy (Mama Rose), White Christmas (Martha), Mamma Mia (Rosie), Spongebob (Sandy), and The Addams Family (Pugsely). She was also a part of the professional ensemble productions of the west coast premiere of Mary Page Marlowe (Connie) and Apologia (ASM). You may recognize her from the reading of the new musical Ziggy, Stardust, and Me (Ms. Dulick) that happened earlier this year here at SDSU! Bella Brady (Swing/Kost Understudy)

Bella Brady is a sophomore working towards her BA in Theatre Arts, Performance (MT). Recent theatre credits include Cinderella in Into the Woods (Grossmont College Theatre), Lilli/ Kate in Kiss Me, Kate (Westview Theatre Company), Norma in Perfect Arrangement (Skull and Dagger Dramatic Society), and Ensemble/Rona Lisa Peretti u/s in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (SDSU). In addition to theatre, Bella has recently been stepping her toes into film, performing in multiple student-led short films here at SDSU and hopes to explore more in this field. Next up, Bella is pleased to announce she will be abroad for the fall semester, attending British American Drama Academy’s London Theatre Program!

Sarah Glick (Swing)

Sarah Glick is thrilled to be taking part in her final show at SDSU. Sarah is a senior from Orange County and is majoring in Graphic Design. Previous SDSU credits include Steel Pier (Mick’s Pick/Couple #8) and Musical Theatre Club’s production of Heathers (New Wave Girl). Some of her other favorite roles include Olive (Spelling Bee), Rumpleteaser (Cats), Gingy (Shrek), and most recently, Timmy Turner in the original parody musical, Slightly Strange Parents. She has also worked as a choreographer for numerous productions including Cats, Guys and Dolls, and Bye, Bye Birdie. He has been involved in several projects at the Dance Center in Carmel, participated in the Trentino Music Festival in Italy, and was involved with James and the Giant Peach at Southwestern College. SDSU performing arts invites you to take part in an exciting opportunity to support its new Performing Arts District in a meaningful way by participating in the Take A Seat campaign.

You have the opportunity to Take A Seat in the spotlight and enjoy having your name, a sentiment, anniversary date, or the name of another person you wish to honor laser-engraved on an elegant nameplate placed on one of the theater seats. Your sponsorship will support performances, students, faculty, and the greatest needs of the SDSU performing arts program.
