  • Evergreen, broadleaf, coniferous tree that can grow up to 30–50 m (98–164 ft) high.  Leaves produced in the shade are glossy, light-green, narrow, 2.5-5 cm long, stiff, with a sharp point, and in two rows on the branchlets.  Exposed leaves of mature trees are arrayed radially around the branchlet, and are spreading, glossy, dark-green, 0.7 – 2.8 cm long, lanceolate or triangular-ovate. Pollen cones are solitary, cylindrical and 20 cm long. Seed cones, which are dark green, are huge, 30 × 22 cm, weighing as much as 10 kg.

  • Hardy to USDA Zone 8          Native to Queensland, Australia.  The common name is a reference to the Bunya Mountains which are in its native range.

  • bidwillii: John Carne Bidwill sent Sir William Jackson Hooker, Director of Kew Gardens, the first specimens.  Hooker published the first description of the plant in 1843 and named it to honor the Bidwill.
