  • Conifer, evergreen, very low growing, 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) by 5 ft (1.5 m).  This dwarf form develops into a compact mat with branches on top of others, spreading out into sprays.  Leaves (needles) in whorls of 3, linear-lanceolate, spiny-pointed, 6-8 mm long.  Foliage bluish-green, but may be slightly purplish in winter.
  • Sun. Tolerant of many soils, thrives under adverse conditions.  It is sometimes staked and grown as an attractive shrub with cascading branches.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 4      ‘Nana’ introduced from Japan in 1922, where species is native.  The cultivar ‘Bonin Islands’ is also sometimes known as ‘Nana’.
