  • Conifer, evergreen tree, to 130 ft (40 m), smaller and slower growing than the Pacific coast form.  Buds oval-conical, apex pointed.  Needles flattened, vary widely in color, usually dark green to grey-green, sometimes glaucous (bluish-green, as shown here), radially arranged, 25 mm long. Cones, mostly 4-7 cm (smaller than coast type), bracts oppressed, spreading, or reflexed.
  • Sun.  Grows in colder and drier environments than the coastal form.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone 4 (Rocky Mountain type) (Pacific Coast type and hardy to Zone 6)  Native range primarily the Rocky Mountains and west to eastern Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona.
  • menziesii: named after Archibald Menzies (1745-1842), Scottish physician and naturalist who collected in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Dallas, Oregon: Delbert Hunter Arboretum and Botanic Garden.
