Hinoki Cypress / Chamaecyparis obtusa

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Fernspray Gold’ – A New Zealand introduction with beautiful arching fern-like sprays of soft golden needles. The loose growth habit is pyramidal, getting broader with age. This delightful conifer makes an excellent container or bonsai specimen and reaches 6′ high by 4′ wide in 10 years. Prefers some shelter from winds. Grows 10-12′ high by 5-6′ wide. Zone 5.

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Lycopodioides’ (syn. f. lycopodioides) – This cultivar of Hinoki Cypress gets its name from that the fact that it much resembles club moss or Lycopodium. It is a slow growing selection with dense twisted branches (cord or whip-like in form) of bluish-green. It prefers part to full sun and works well in containers. Grows 8-9′ high by 4-6′ wide. Hardy to zone 4.

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Lucas’ – This Dutch introduction was developed with ‘Lutea Nova’ used as the seed parent. It features very airy arching sprays of butter yellow foliage that is creamy white near the base. The open foliage habit allows the contrast of the reddish-brown stems to be appreciated. Turns light green when shaded. Grows 5′ high by 3′ wide in 10 years. Zone 4.

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Mariesii’ – An unusual Hinoki Cypress which has a squat globe-shaped growth habit when young and eventually becomes more upright with age. It is slow growing and features fine green foliage highly variegated in cream (deepening to yellow in fall and winter). This variegation becomes near white in the shade. Grows 3-4′ high by 3′ wide. Hardy to zone 5.

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Kamaeni Hiba’ – An old Japanese cultivar (Chamaecyparis obtusa is also known as Japanese False Cypress) with thread-like foliage that is golden-yellow in colour. It has an irregular pyramidal form and grows 3 to 6″ a year on average. Prefers part to full sun with well drained soil. Works well in containers. Grows 3-4′ high by 3′ wide. Hardy to zone 5.
