German Bearded Iris III / Iris germanica

irishellodarkness (300x300)Iris germanica ‘Hello Darkness’ (Schreiner 1992) – One of the darkest of the German Bearded Iris with jet black falls, dark royal purple standards and a deep purplish-blue beard. The petals are nicely ruffled and have a glossy sheen, producing 6 to 7 buds per stem. ‘Hello Darkness’ is also a 1999 Dykes Medal winner. Grows 37″ high by 18″ wide. Hardy to zone 3.

It is an early season bloomer with up to 11 flowers per stem. ‘Mexican Holiday’s’ parentage includes ‘Firewater’, ‘Condottiere’, ‘Grecian Skies’ and ‘Glorious Morning’. Grows 36″ high by 18″ wide. Native Plants of British Columbia

kalmiamicrophylla (300x298)Kalmia microphylla – The Western Bog Laurel is a sparsely branched evergreen shrub usually found in acidic bogs or moist alpine meadows. The tiny pink flowers are held terminally and emerge from pleated buds – these are produced from May to June. It has thin dark green leaves with a white indumentum on the reverse. Grows 12-36″ high by 12-20″ wide. Zone 3.

ledumgroenlandicum (300x293)Ledum groenlandicum (syn. L. latifolium) – Although Labrador Tea is now classified as Rhododendron groenlandicum, you are likely to find it being sold under the old name. It is native throughout northern North America and Greenland and features late spring white flowers and slender dark green leaves with a rusty brown reverse. Grows 2-4′ tall by 3-4′ wide. Zone 2.

delphiniumnuttallii (295x300)Delphinium nuttallii – Nuttall’s Larkspur is named after naturalist Thomas Nuttall and is only found in the BC interior, although it is coastal in Washington and Oregon. It flowers from May to June with spires of deep purplish-blue over finely cut basal leaves. Native to coastal bluffs and rocky meadows. Self seeding annual or short-lived perennial. Grows 12-24″ high. Hardy to zone 4.

nativelimnanthes (300x298)Limnanthes douglasii – Poached Egg Plant is a self-seeding annual which is found in many BC gardens but is actually a native of Oregon and California. It is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner with fragrant 1″ wide white blooms with a prominent yellow center, hence the common name. Finely cut lime green foliage. Grows 6-12″ high by 6″ wide (in mass). Zone 5.

plectritiscongesta (300x292)Plectritis congesta – Sea Blush is another self-seeding annual found in moist meadows and the coastal forests of Vancouver Island. It is a member of the Valerian family and features bright to pale pink chive-like blooms from April to June. These are borne over rounded mid green leaves with an opposite arrangement. Grows 4-24″ high by 4-6″ wide. Hardy to zone 3.

Clematis VII

clemfloridasieboldii (300x287)Clematis florida ‘Sieboldii’ (syn. var. sieboldiana) – A rather tender Clematis with spectacular white flowers (usually tinged green at the petal tip) accented with a bold purple stamen boss, followed by fluffy seedheads in the fall. It blooms continually from June to September and prefers some shelter from cold winds. Grows 6-8′ high. Pruning group C. Hardy to zone 7.

Blooms late spring into summer, and September. Grows 6-8′. Pruning group B. Zone 4.

It features single blooms in May, June and September (with the first flush being larger) that are an intense violet with a reddish-purple bar and contrasting yellow stamens. Very free-flowering. Grows 6-8′. Pruning group B. Hardy to zone 4.

These are borne in May, June and again in September. ‘Cotton Candy’ is also short enough to be used in a large container. Grows 6-9′. Pruning group B. Zone 4.

Coleus III / Solenostemon

Coleus blumei) – A stunning Coleus with deeply lobed burgundy fern-like leaves edged in a contrasting gold. ‘Kiwi Fern’ makes a great centerpiece in mixed shade containers or hanging baskets. This variety is also  tolerant of full sun in coastal BC and a part of the Stained Glasswork series. Grows 12-18″ high by 10-12″ wide. Annual.

Japanese Maples / Acer palmatum

acertaylor (300x297)Acer palmatum ‘Taylor’ – A Dutch introduction with deeply lobed, serrated lime green leaves that emerge pink and develop white margins. It colours best with some morning sun but will need to be mulched, as the leaves will scorch as soon as the soil dries. Due to its slow growth habit ‘Taylor’ also makes a great container specimen. Grows 4′ high and 3′ wide in 10 years. Z6.

acergreenmist (300x295)Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Green Mist’ – This weeping Japanese maple has very finely cut green leaves that often have a crimson overcast with some sun. While slow growing at first, it is rather vigorous with age and can be trained into a taller specimen with staking. ‘Green Mist’ also has intense autumn tones of orange and deep red. Grows 3-5′ high by 5-7′ wide in 10 years. Zone 6.

acertaiyonishiki (296x300)Acer palmatum ‘Taiyo nishiki’ – This sport of ‘Asahi-zuru’ has deeply divided green leaves with prominent pink and creamy-yellow highlights in spring. The Japanese name translates as ‘big-leaved brocade’ and fall colours include reds and oranges (with some sun). It also has beautiful red stems that add to the overall display. Grows 8′ high by 4-5′ wide in 10 years. Zone 6.

acermejishi (300x293)Acer palmatum ‘Meijishi’ (syn. ‘Ribesifolium’, ‘Shishi-gashira’) – This cultivar name comes up infrequently and is just a female reference to the Lion’s Head maple or ‘Shishi-gashira’ (with ‘Ojishi’ being the male lion). It is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner with congested currant-like leaves and fabulous fall foliage. Grows 12 to 15′ high and wide (occasionally taller). Zone 6.

acerasahizuru (300x290)Acer palmatum ‘Asahi-zuru’ – The ‘Rising Sun’ Japanese maple is best grown in partial shade, with some protection from the hot afternoon sun. It features spectacular variegated foliage of green leaves with irregular variegation of pink and white which changes from leaf to leaf. Autumn will bring foliage tones of red and orange. Grows 10-15′ high by 15-18′ wide. Hardy to zone 5.

This cultivar flushes with pink highlights on green foliage, shifting to green in summer and a brilliant reddish-orange in autumn. ‘Coonara Pygmy’ makes an excellent container plant. Grows 4-5′ high and wide. Hardy to zone 5.

It eventually fades to green but makes up for this with vibrant yellows and oranges in the fall. A great choice for those who appreciate seasonal colour. Grows 4-6′ high by 6-8′. Zone 6.

Grows 2-3’ high by 18-36″ wide in 10 years. Zone 5.

Vertrees find and features broad golden leaves that unfurl with salmon-pink to reddish-orange highlights that are more pronounced with some sun. Pink-Flowered Perennials V

D. tetrandrum ‘Red Light’) – This seed grown variety of a North American species bears numerous magenta-pink blooms with yellow centres and recurved petals (resembling a cyclamen), usually from May to June. It prefers acidic, evenly moist soils and may go summer dormant during dry periods. Grows 18″ high by 10″ wide. Zone 4.

campmediumpink2 (300x294)Campanula medium ‘Champion Pink’ – Canterbury Bells are at best short-lived biennials that often self-seed. ‘Champion Pink’ makes an excellent cut flower and has won a Fleuroselect gold medal in this category. The spires of pink bells are borne from early to late summer but some should be left to go to seed and naturalize. Grows 24″ high by 18″ wide. Hardy to zone 3.

incarvillea (300x285)Incarvillea delavayi – The Hardy Gloxinia is a lovely cottage garden perennial that has fallen a bit out of favour, so it can be difficult to find. This native of China produces a rosette of divided mid green leaves and upright stems of numerous trumpet-shaped rose pink blooms with a yellow throat. Consider a winter mulch in colder regions. Grows 18″ high by 12-18″ wide. Zone 6.

erigeronseabreeze (300x297)Erigeron glaucus ‘Sea Breeze’ – The common name of ‘Beach Fleabane’ hardly does this perennial justice, as it bears masses of fringed-petaled pink daisies (with contrasting yellow eyes) from late spring through to fall. It tolerates drought once established and the greyish-green foliage is also reliably evergreen in mild regions. Grows 8-10″ high by 12-16″ wide. Hardy to zone 5.

Flowering over the fern-like mid green foliage begins in early summer and lasts for many weeks. Requires sharp winter drainage. Grows 12-15″ high by 24″ wide. Zone 5.
