Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik looks unrecognizable during TV appearance

Nineties rock legend John Rzeznik looked unrecognizable when he appeared on Seven’s The Morning Show to promote his upcoming tour.

Rzeznik, 57, rose to fame in the nineties as the frontman of the hugely successful band the Goo Goo Dolls, and he has since switched up his look.

Sure, the singer has stuck with his signature shaggy blonde hair that became synonymous with his sex symbol status, and he hasn’t even managed to ditch the tank tops, but his face now looks smoother than it did when he was decades younger.

Rzeznik was rocking a maroon cap, but even that wasn’t hiding the noticeable change to his looks.

The singer shared his excitement to return to Australia in February next year, and the recovering alcoholic explained he’d be trading Aussie beer for spending time at the beach.

Like plenty of other bands from the nineties, the Goo Goo Dolls are having a moment on TikTok with young people rediscovering their music and going viral with covers of their famous songs like ‘Iris’ and ‘Slide.’

It speaks to the power and relevancy of the band’s music, for instance, the hit ‘Iris’ only just recently hit a billion streams on the music platform Spotify.

When asked if he’d expected this kind of longevity from his music, Rzeznik admitted it was a huge surprise.

“You always hope, but no,” he said modestly.

Although he did add that of course, it was always something he wanted to happen.

“You hope that you build something that will last,” he admitted.

The singer also had nothing but praise for the people rediscovering his music and posting their own versions online.

“There are people that do it better than me,” he said.

Despite the mass fame that Rzeznik has experienced he keeps a pretty low profile and has remained a dedicated musician even through the highs and lows of fame.

He recently opened up about how difficult he found the pandemic when suddenly he didn’t have the option to perform anymore.

“You can tend to sort of take it for granted. Our lives were up-ended … having it taken away was eye-opening,” he told USA Today.

“The hardest part for me was feeling the loss of purpose. And I think a lot of people felt that.”

He also shared that he wasn’t prepared to rest on his previous success and he was always thinking about the next thing.

“I still have ideas for songs in my head. I’m not ready to just hang it up and be a nostalgia act. I’m still swinging. That’s all you can ask for.”
