Cunninghamia lanceolata

One of two species of the genus Cunningamia of the Cypress family. The plant is also called "Chinese spruce" - the shape of its crown really resembles a spruce, and its distribution area is the southern and central regions of China. It grows in mixed forests together with broad-leaved species, and is also grown in its homeland on an industrial scale for its wood.

Cunningamia is an evergreen upright tree up to 50 m tall with a pyramidal crown. The branches are arranged whorled, the bark is gray-brown and smooth. The plant has the property of shedding its lower branches completely, resulting in exposure of the trunk. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, sickle-shaped, the upper side is glossy, the lower side is matte. Very prickly. They have a pleasant aroma. It gets darker in winter, but does not fall off. Male cones are collected in 20 pieces at the ends of the shoots, female cones with large scales in 3-4.

The seeds are small lionfish of a yellowish-brown color. Cunningamia is the second source of wood in Asia after bamboo. Its wood is light, resistant to rot and parasites, and is used in construction, especially shipbuilding and paper making. It also produces essential oils high in terpineol and cedrol.

Winter-hardy down to -17 degrees (winter hardiness zone 7). It is grown and bears fruit in Sochi. Prefers moist, slightly acidic soils and does not tolerate lime. Grows well when pine litter is added to the soil. Demanding on air humidity. Can be grown as a greenhouse crop and as a houseplant. It will benefit from fertilizers for conifers and frequent spraying. Propagated by fresh seeds at the end of winter.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 7 (-18°C to -12°C).
