Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Helen Mirren are in town to promote their movie “The Good Liar” — but they stole the show at Broadway’s “Freestyle Love Supreme” Sunday, when they were brought onstage to talk about their friendship and careers.
The stars of the Lin-Manuel Miranda hip-hop show then riffed on the iconic thespians’ answers to turn them into raps.
When McKellen was asked how they became close, the (openly gay) star quipped, “We were both into men.” The musical’s Utkarsh Ambudkar turned that reply into: “Back in the day, we lived parallel lives/the only thing about it is neither one of us wanted wives.”
We’re told they got a standing ovation and went backstage. McKellen wore a Pete Buttigieg T-shirt.
