Dwarf Japanese Cedar or 'Globosa Nana' is an evergreen shrub with soft, bluish-green needles that spiral around slender branchlets. It is a very compact variety of cedar, growing 3 – 4 feet both tall and wide. This evergreen conifer grows into a globe shape without any pruning or shaping; it is beautiful in all seasons and can shift in color, turning from yellow green in summer months to blue-green or rusty red in winter months.

It is a wonderful choice for a low-maintenance, sphere-shaped topiary. It has small, spherical, rosette-shaped cones growing less than an inch in size, which are a delightful addition to the plant. It also boasts showy, reddish exfoliating bark. This variety of cedar is small enough to be a container plant, or it can be planted as small hedge of shrubs, added as a welcoming entryway on either side of a front door or patio entrance, or used in any landscaping project.

The Dwarf Japanese Cedar 'Globosa Nana' is very easy to grow and care for but is a slow grower, only gaining about 3 – 4 inches per year. It does best in full sun or partial sun and is tolerant of most soil types. It is very hardy plant but should protected from harsh, drying winds. It grows in zones 5 – 9 and needs very little trimming or pruning. Trimming the dead branchlets within the interior of the plant helps keep it performing at its best, but overall, it does not need to be shaped or trimmed back to retain its flowing, spherical shape. It resists deer, pests, and diseases and is resilient against drought, making it a very hardy plant and a perfect choice for any garden.

Care

  1. Light Requirements: The Dwarf Japanese Cedar thrives in full sun to partial shade. It is important to provide it with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and foliage color. However, it can tolerate some shade, especially during hot afternoon hours.

  2. Soil and Moisture: This variety of Cryptomeria prefers well-draining soil that is slightly acidic to neutral in pH. It is essential to ensure that the soil remains consistently moist, especially during the plant's establishment period. However, be cautious not to overwater, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot. Regular watering during dry periods is necessary, but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

  3. Temperature and Hardiness: The Dwarf Japanese Cedar is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9. It can withstand a wide range of temperatures but prefers cool to moderate climates. Protect the plant from extreme heat or cold, as it may cause stress or damage.

  4. Pruning: This shrub has a naturally compact and rounded shape, requiring minimal pruning. However, you can trim any dead or damaged branches as needed to maintain its overall appearance and health. Prune during the dormant season, preferably in late winter or early spring.

  5. Fertilization: Regular fertilization is not typically necessary for the Dwarf Japanese Cedar. However, if you notice slow growth or pale foliage, you can apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer formulated for evergreen shrubs in early spring. Follow the package instructions for application rates. Fertilize in early spring with our HICOTE 360 day slow release fertilizer for maximum growth and plant health.

  6. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or bark, around the base of the plant. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weed growth, and regulates soil temperature.

  7. Pests and Diseases: The Dwarf Japanese Cedar is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for common issues like spider mites or scale insects. Regular inspection and prompt treatment, if necessary, will help maintain the plant's health.

  8. Container Growth: The Dwarf Japanese Cedar can be grown in containers, making it suitable for small gardens or patios. Ensure that the pot has good drainage and use a high-quality potting mix. Follow the same care guidelines, providing sufficient sunlight, water, and occasional fertilization.

By following these care instructions, you can enjoy a healthy and visually appealing Dwarf Japanese Cedar, which will enhance the beauty of your garden or landscape. Remember to monitor the plant's growth and adapt the care routine as needed to ensure its well-being.

Landscape Uses

One of the key landscape uses of the Dwarf Japanese Cedar is as a specimen plant. Its unique shape and texture make it a standout feature, drawing attention and adding visual interest to any garden or landscape. Planted as a singular accent, it can create a sense of structure and balance in the overall design.

The dense foliage of the Globosa Nana Cryptomeria also makes it an excellent choice for creating low hedges or borders. When planted in a row, its compact form forms a tidy, evergreen barrier that adds a touch of formality to the landscape. The rich green color of its foliage provides a beautiful backdrop for other plants and flowers, allowing them to stand out and create a vibrant display.

Furthermore, the Dwarf Japanese Cedar is often used in rock gardens or Asian-inspired landscapes, where its unique appearance complements the natural stone elements and adds a touch of tranquility. Its slow growth rate and compact size make it well-suited for container gardening, allowing you to bring a touch of elegance and evergreen beauty to patios, decks, or balconies.

Overall, the Dwarf Japanese Cedar, or Globosa Nana Cryptomeria, offers versatility in landscape design. Whether used as a specimen plant, low hedge, or container plant, its compact form, lush foliage, and year-round greenery make it an exceptional addition to any garden, providing visual appeal and a touch of serenity.
