Yoshino Cryptomeria, commonly called Japanese Cedar is a densely branched tree that grows up to 40 feet tall and 20 feet wide and is covered in soft needles. This evergreen conifer grows in a symmetrical, pyramid shape and shifts in color throughout the year, turning from bright green or blue green in the summer to blue-green or coppery-bronze in winter months.
Japanese Cedar does not heavily shed or litter, so there is very little leaf and debris clean up. It has a showy trunk with reddish-brown exfoliating bark as well as small, spherical cones that grow to about inch in diameter. It has a woody fragrance similar to a fir or spruce and makes a wonderful wind break, dramatic feature tree, or natural privacy fence.
The Japanese Cedar is the national tree of Japan and is considered a sacred tree, planted near temples. It is native to the forests of Japan and China, where ancient cedars reach up to 150 feet tall. It is very easy to grow and care for and is a fast-growing tree, adding up to 3 feet in height per year. It does best in full sun or partial sun and grows well in most soil types. It grows in zones 5 – 8 and needs very little trimming or pruning. Pruning dead branches at the start of summer and trimming as needed to maintain a desired look is all the maintenance this tree needs.
It resists pests and diseases and is resilient against moderate drought. It even stands up to cold weather well, making it a very hardy plant. It needs regular watering while its root system develops. Once established, it only needs about an inch of water per week. This tree is simple to maintain and makes a very elegant privacy screen or natural border because of its beauty and uniformity.
