Refurbished Barcelona stadium to house fans’ ashes with space for 26,000 cremated supporters

The newly-refurbished Nou Camp will leave a huge space where 26,000 cremated fans will be rested.

With the Nou Camp set to undergo major changes, one of them has included building space for a huge memorial to season ticket holders who have lost their lives.

An area of 180 square metres will be made available for the creation of a cinerary memorial consisting of 26,600 columbariums with commemorative plaques.

A space near the pitch of the renovated Nou Camp, set to be completed in three years time, will house the ashes of dedicated fans.

The funeral urns will be hidden behind huge murals, illustrating iconic moments throughout the club's history.

The future Nou Camp has already been granted the necessary permits to incorporate a funeral space and has been in the pipeline for years.

Barcelona members will be allowed early access to purchase a plot, which has been made available from Tuesday this week.

After two weeks, the rest of the public will be able to buy any space that they want.

The columbarium will be a large open space with four illuminated cubes made to simulate sky light.

Plans to renovate the Nou Camp have been in the process for years after initial plans to build a new stadium were rejected in 2014.

Financial constraints saw a new stadium scrapped with the Barca board opting to remodel the Nou Camp instead.

It will see the capacity reach 105,000 and extend its record already as the biggest sports stadium in Europe.

The Nou Camp currently already holds just over 99,000 but the expansion plans will see it grow to over 100,000.

Construction was planned to start in 2019 but there have been several delays that have prevented any work from taking place.

After experiencing setbacks, renovation work finally began on 1 June 2023 despite the City Council of Barcelona granting a license for renovation after the 2021/22 season.

Barelona will play at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic while work continues at the Nou Camp.
