Statement of Significance

Homestead Park Origins:
Archerfield Homestead was established in 1873. Selector Henry Farley occupied the land for the requisite period of five years and having made improvements to the land during that time, applied to have a survey 1878 so that he could have a Deed of Grant for the property known as ‘Archerfield’. The survey included ‘60 trees planted and cradled, value 60 Pounds’. Title was transferred to William Edward Murphy in 1878. By this time the property consisted of 7,608 acres. The Homestead was occupied subsequently by the Durack family after whom the name of a nearby suburb is derived.

Scientific significance:- The tree is of outstanding size and it is a particularly good example of its species.

Social significance:- This is the largest tree and a significant landmark in the park. Homestead Park is frequented by local residents who are particularly proud of this tree.

Historic significance - associated with the original house in the area called Archerfield Homestead. The bronze plaque at the base of the tree states ‘This historic Kauri Pine Tree was reputedly planted by the Duke of Windsor in 1901.’ The nominator believes this to be incorrect as he believes that the tree was part of a Government Survey conducted c1878.

Aesthetic significance:- The tree is centrally placed in the park and is of outstanding size and appearance.

This Kauri pine is located on a rise in the centre of the park.
