Many of the early students also brought their slaves to the college with them. Upon Emancipation some of the African Americans of the community--mostly women--stayed on as servants, forming what is now called the Hollins Community. Although the servants played an integral part in the college's success, students were strongly discouraged from acknowledging them as people. Rules forbidding any 'familiarity' with the servants perpetuated a prejudicial attitude toward the African American community that would persist well into the 1940s. Determined to give voice to the African American community that served as the silent workforce for Hollins College, Ethel Morgan Smith [herself a graduate of Hollis College] succeeded in finding individuals to step forward and tell their stories."--jacket ; VG/VG. Condition: Fine. 8-by-10-inch black-and-white photograph (image 6 by 8 inches). Olsen is best known for her book, Tell Me a Riddle. In recent years, she has become a symbol of the hardships many women writers face when trying to juggle family and money and time to write. A fine photograph, inscribed twice by Olsen to the bookseller Peter B. Howard of Serendipity Books, who apparently appraised or brokered her papers. The longer of the two inscriptions, in very small cursive, read, "For Peter Howard, who knows better than anyone except me the mess my papers are in-and other such matters-salute to you Peter-may the best be for you and there you love-May we meet again. Tille.".

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near fine. First Thus. A very attractive re-issue of Olsen's first book, originally published by Lippincott in 1961, a collection of four stories. All four stories were included in Best American Short Stories the year they were first published in literary journals. Olsen is considered an important American writer, despite publishing just two books-these stories and a collection of non-fiction pieces titled Silences that considered writer's block and the difficulty of working class women and mothers (Olsen was both) finding time and energy to write. Olsen also published Yonnondio in 1974, an unfinished novel she wrote in the 1930s. First printing of this reissue (states First Delacorte Edition on the copyright page). A near fine copy in a near fine, tanned dust jacket. This copy is inscribed by Olsen to her inscribed to her literary agent (or perhaps her editor), with an accompanying letter signed transmitting contracts for books Olsen never wrote. The inscription, written as usual in Olsen's minute handwriting, reads, "Julia Wallace-Dear Julia-Thank you for caring for this-giving it the life of your reading-[deleted] Thank you for your [deleted] work-in haste-for me. Tillie. April 1980." The letter, also to Wallace, refers to two books-"the work of fiction" and "the death book"-and changes she made to the contracts. The letter is typed and signed in full in ink.

First edition, uncorrected proof. First edition, uncorrected proof. [2], xiv, 289, [1] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Proof Copy, Inscribed. Inscribed by the author on the first page: "Uncorrected - / I wish I were. / Best / Tillie Olsen." Silences was the major critical work by Tillie Olsen, addressing "the relationship of circumstance; - including class, color, sex, the times, climate into which one is born - to the creation of literature." The book grew out of a talk delivered at the Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study, in which Olsen distinguished between the natural silences that reflect "that necessary time for renewal, lying fallow, gestation" in a writer's career and those silences arising from oppression and neglect, "the unnatural thwarting of what struggles to come into being, but cannot." Olsen considers the marginalization and frustration of women writers, and devotes the second half of Silences to the creative struggles of Herman Melville, Thomas Hardy, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Anne Porter, and others. Buff wrappers printed in brown, spine titled in pencil. Publisher's promotional notice loosely inserted, publication date marked in ink August rather than November. Near fine. Inscribed by the author on the first page [2], xiv, 289, [1] pp. 1 vols. 8vo.
