Published in The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Bulbous Plants by Mrs. Loudon. Day & Haghe Lithe. to the Queen. Jane Loudon née Webb, (1807-1858), "was to Victorian gardening what Mrs Beeton was to cookery. Her beautifully illustrated books on gardening and plant identification sold in their thousands and women all over the country were enthused by them to take up gardening as a hobby" (V&A online). She met her husband, the landscape gardener and horticultural writer John Claudius Loudon, when her extraordinary early novel The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century (1827) - a pioneering science fiction work which set futuristic technology, including a steam plough, among the trappings of Egyptomania - was reviewed favourably by Loudon in The Gardener's Magazine. The Scot decided to "seek out the acquaintance of the writer, whom he believed to be male" (ODNB) - and they were married seven months later. Size: 245 x 184 mm. Mounted Size: 410 x 340 mm.
