DNA sequencing of nrDNA, plus four cp DNA regions: petN-psbM, trnS-tenG, trnD-trnT and trnL-trnF of J. excelsa and J. polycarpos from Azerbaijan, Greece, Lebanon and Turkey revealed that putative J. excelsa from Azerbaijan is J. polycarpos (= J. excelsa subsp. polycarpos). Two Lebanon Juniperus populations from Afqa (1306 m) and Wadi El Njass (2287 m), previously shown to be divergent in their microsatellites, were found to be J. excelsa and J. polycarpos, respectively. This is the first report of the occurrence of J. polycarpos in Lebanon. To aid comparisons, DNA sequences from J. seravschanica and J. polycarpos var. turcomanica and J. procera were included in the Bayesian analysis.
Sequencing of nrDNA, plus four cp DNA regions: petN-psbM, trnS-trnG, trnD-trnT and trnL-trnF of newly acquired samples of J. excelsa from Bulgaria, Cyprus and Turkey showed little variation in J. excelsa (sensu stricto), except for the unusual situation in Lebanon, where J. excelsa and J. polycarpos (and likely J. p. var. turcomanica) grow near each other and may be hybridizing. The genetic composition of the eastern-most populations of J. excelsa in Turkey is unknown and deserves further study. Published on-line www.phytologia.org Phytologia 98(1): 1-7 (Jan. 5, 2016). Recently, Adams et al. (2014a) examined J. excelsa and putative J. polycarpos from the eastern Mediterreanea eastward into Azerbaijan. They reported that putative J. excelsa from Azerbaijan is J. polycarpos (= J. excelsa subsp. polycarpos). Two Lebanon Juniperus populations from Afqa (1306 m) and Wadi El Njass (2287 m), previously shown to be divergent in their microsatellites, were shown to be J. excelsa and J. polycarpos, respectively. This was the first report of the occurrence of J. polycarpos in Lebanon.
DNA analysis of Juniperus excelsa from throughout its range revealed that J. polycarpos, instead of J. excelsa occupies central and eastern Turkey. Based on nrDNA (ITS) data, it appears that relictual hybridization has occurred in southeastern Turkey between J. polycarpos and J. turcomanica. Surprisingly, evidence of incomplete lineage sorting or relictual hybridization between J. polycarpos and J. seravschanica was found in central Turkey and northwest Iran. A total of over 100 accessions representing 11 species of Juniperus in Iran using multiple DNA regions were included in phylogenetic analyses. Analyses of four plastid intergenic spacers (petN-psbM, trnD-trnT, trnL-trnF, trnS-trnG) and nrDNA ITS sequences retrieved Juniperus in Iran as a monophyletic group with two clades corresponding to sections Juniperus and Sabina. Our data support the recognition of J. communis, J. deltoides, J. foetidissima, J. polycarpos var. polycarpos and var. turcomanica, J. sabina and J. seravschanica in Iran. Based on sequences from nrDNA ITS, plastid petN-psbM and single copy nuclear gene LHCA, specimens from the SE Iran that were previously considered to be a part of the J. excelsa complex were shown to be J. seravschanica. Samples from NE Iran were found to be J. polycarpos var. turcomanica and specimens from NW Iran were shown to be J. polycarpos var. polycarpos. Plants belonging to the J. excelsa complex from SW Iran appear to be of hybrid origin be...
DNA sequences were analyzed from 19 populations of J. phoenicea from throughout its range. The sequence data (nrDNA, petN-psbM) revealed that J. phoenicea is clearly divided into two taxa. These taxa have been recognized as var. (subsp.) phoenicea and var. (subsp.) turbinata by Adams (2011) and Farjon (2005). However, the magnitude of the differences in the DNA regions, along with the differences in pollen shedding times, morphology and prodelphinidin content support the recognition of J. turbinata Guss. No differentiation was found between the typical Mediterranean and Canary Island populations, offering no support for the recognition of J. phoenicea subsp. canariensis (Guyot) Rivas-Martinez. Juniperus turbinata appears to be widespread from Madeira - Canary Islands to the Sinai with few DNA differences among most populations. However, some populations (Grazalema, Madeira, Sinai, central Italy) had moderate amounts of divergence (3-4 mutations) and warrant additional study

Quantitative Analysis of Total Carotenoids in Some Vegetables Consumed in Akwa Ibom State, NigeriaThe quantitative analysis of total carotenoids in some vegetables consumed in Akwa Ibom State was evaluated using UV-Spectrophotometer and acetone as extraction solvent. Ten different vegetable samples i.e. Carrot (Daucus carota),purpleegg plant(Solanum melongena), green egg plant (Solanum melongena), tomato(Solanum lycopersicum), cucumber(Cucummis sativa),fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis), spinach(Spinacia oleracea), red pepper(Capsicum annuum, green pepper(Capsicum annuum)and bitterleaf (Vernonia amygdalina)were purchased from local markets in Itam and Ikot Akpaden, both in Akwa Ibom State. The fresh samples were washed with tap water, followed by distilled water. The samples were homogenized separately using sterile mortar and pestle with 10 ml acetone as extraction solvent. The extract was centrifuged at 10,000rpm for 15 mins in 4°C and the supernatant analysed as soon as possible using spectrophotometer (UV-VIS 2500) at 470 nm. The quantification of carotenoids was carrie...
