Thick stemmed silver fir Vernacular name
Pacific Silver-fir (Scientific name)
Abies amabilis 'Spreading Star'
Pine familiy (Pinaceae)
Dwarf with a giant foot
This fir is a spontaneously occurring mutation, a kind of natural dwarfism. The variety grows normally in width but scarcely at all in length, making it look out of proportion. At first glance it is a short (up to 1.5 meters high) shrub but hidden inside its hanging branches is a great thick trunk. This mutation occurred spontaneously in the Blijdenstein Pinetum in Hilversum in 1920, and from there has been cultivated and distributed to gardens around the world. The needles are notched at the apex, two white stripes on the bottom and have the characteristic scent of tangerines.
