2025 Toyota Crown Signia First Look: A New SUV Is Coronated

The hybrid-powered premium sport-utility vehicle is set to go on sale next year.

Toyota is expanding its Crown lineup with a new SUV for the 2025 model year. Known as Signia, the Crown SUV will be positioned alongside the Crown sedan in showrooms, giving buyers another more spacious option for an upscale Toyota.

A Crown With an SUV Body

The Crown Signia is based on the same vehicle architecture as the Crown and also borrows some of its styling cues from its sedan counterpart. Up front, the Crown Signia sports a "hammerhead" fascia somewhat reminiscent of the Crown's, albeit with a few tweaks to the headlights and color-matched grille assembly.

You'll find fewer similarities behind the B-pillars, where the Crown Signia swaps the Crown's sloping roofline for a more traditional SUV shape. The Crown Signia doesn't look like a lumbering SUV in profile, however, thanks to an elevated beltline and compact greenhouse that provide more of a sport-wagon look.

At the rear, the Crown Signia's power tailgate incorporates a wraparound taillight that bears a familial resemblance to the unit found on the Crown's trunk.

Wheel size and style depends on which Crown Signia trim you select. XLE models get black-accented 19-inch alloy wheels, while top-spec Limited models roll on 21-inch wheels finished in dark-gray metallic.

Hybrid Drive and All-Wheel Drive Come Standard

The Crown Signia comes exclusively as a hybrid with all-wheel drive. The powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a continuously variable automatic transmission, a pair of front-mounted electric motors, and a single electric motor on the back axle. The SUV's all-wheel-drive system is known as electric on-demand, which means it only kicks in when extra traction is needed. Under normal driving conditions, the Crown Signia acts as a front-wheel-drive vehicle for improved efficiency. When needed, up to 80 percent of the driving force can be shifted to the rear wheels.

The SUV is equipped with three selectable drive modes — Normal, Eco, and Sport. At low speeds, there's a dedicated EV mode that allows the Crown Signia to drive on electric power alone.

The total system output is 243 horsepower, which Toyota says is good for towing up to 2,700 pounds. Fuel economy is estimated at 36 mpg.

A Plush Interior With Loads of Technology

The Crown Signia boasts an upscale cabin with bronze-finished accents and soft-touch materials throughout. Crown Signia Limited models further uphold the SUV's premium positioning with leather upholstery featuring double stitching, quilting, and contrasting piping. Seating surfaces in the Crown Signia XLE are covered in fabric and SofTex synthetic leather. Both trims are equipped with eight-way-power front seats as standard.

The Crown Signia's dashboard features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster along with a centrally mounted touchscreen running the latest version of the Toyota Audio Multimedia System. The infotainment software can receive over-the-air updates and is compatible with both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A six-speaker audio system is standard in the Crown Signia XLE, while the Limited receives an 11-speaker JBL Premium setup. Other perks of the Limited grade include a digital rearview mirror, an optional panoramic glass roof, a 360-degree camera with curb view, and a smartphone-based Digital Key, the latter of which requires a subscription to Remote Connect.

Toyota's Intelligent Assistant is available on either Crown Signia trim with an active Drive Connect subscription. It allows the driver to control vehicle functions like navigation and climate settings by using the verbal prompt, "Hey, Toyota."

All Crown Signia models include a dash-mounted vertical wireless phone charger and five USB-C ports — three up front and two in the second row.

Rear seats are 60/40 split folding with an extension panel, allowing rear cargo space for objects up to 6.5 feet long. Total cargo space for the Crown Signia has not been announced as of November 2023, but expect more than the 15.2 cubic-feet offered by the Crown sedan.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the board and includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit assist, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist, road-sign assist, and automatic high-beams. Limited grades can be further optioned with the Advanced Technology package, adding traffic-jam assist, front-cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist.

2025 Toyota Crown Signia to Arrive Mid-2024

As of November 2023, no pricing has been announced for the 2025 Toyota Crown Signia. Toyota has confirmed the SUV will come standard with two years of complimentary factory-scheduled maintenance, and unlimited roadside assistance will be available during that period. Toyota will also provide an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty for the Crown Signia hybrid system, along with a 10-year, 150,000-mile warranty specifically covering the vehicle's battery pack.

The 2025 Crown Signia is scheduled to arrive in Toyota showrooms in summer 2024.
