The new school year has begun for the students of Arlington Heights-based Township High School District 214, with not only hundreds of freshmen starting their high school days for the first time but also new administrators stepping into their new roles.

Scott Rowe is now the new SD214 superintendent, taking the leadership role following the departure of longtime district chief David Schuler. The high school district enrolls some 12,000 students across six schools, including Buffalo Grove High School in Buffalo Grove and John Hersey in Arlington Heights.

Heath McFaul is the new principal at John Hersey High School. He and Rowe welcomed students back to school as they arrived at Hersey for the first day Wednesday.

SD214 spokeswoman Stephanie Kim told Pioneer Press other leaders and teachers started in the district beginning this 2023-2024 academic year. Megan Kelly is the new principal at Rolling Meadows High School and 108 new teachers were hired in the district, Kim explained.

There were some capital improvements in the district over the summer break. At Wheeling High School, the athletic field underwent construction, said Kim. New turf and new stadium lights were installed, and a new track is being laid down. Also, the main gym n the school building now has air conditioning and the school also has a new roof.

Kim said schools across the country are facing attendance issues. At SD214, the district’s attendance policy was updated as of this new academic year, and a new attendance campaign has been launched “to encourage students to go to class, be on time, and stay engaged,” she said.
