The Exorcist: Deceiver has already been confirmed as the second instalment of a new Exorcist trilogy, following the recent release of The Exorcist: Believer.

After creating the new Halloween trilogy, director David Gordon Green and producer Jason Blum reunited to bring back another iconic horror-movie saga.

While introducing a new cast led by Leslie Odom Jr and Ann Dowd, Believer marked the return of The Exorcist's original star Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, Regan's mother, for the first time since 1973.

The Exorcist franchise keeps growing, although so far not as neatly as they expected: The Exorcist: Believer landed mostly negative reviews ahead of its release on October 6, earning a painfully low Rotten Tomatoes score.

Will Deceiver be able to raise the bar for the trilogy? Here's everything we know about the sequel.

The Exorcist: Deceiver release date - When could we expect it?

The Exorcist: Deceiver will be released in cinemas on April 18, 2025.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced this release date in July 2023, over two months ahead of The Exorcist: Believer's release in cinemas, confirming their intention of turning this next Exorcist chapter into a trilogy.

The official title and release date of the third instalment haven't been confirmed yet.

With the writers' strike in Hollywood having finished in late September 2023, the Deceiver team can start working on the next story, although the shooting won't start until the actors' strike is over.

The Exorcist: Deceiver cast - Who's coming back?

The cast for The Exorcist: Deceiver has not been confirmed yet.

Since The Exorcist: Believer was a standalone story with no cliffhangers or future promises, we're not sure who would come back for a second round.

The cast of the movie included Leslie Odom Jr as Victor Fielding, Lidya Jewett as his daughter Angela, Ann Dowd as his neighbour Ann, Jennifer Nettles and Norbert Leo Butz as Katherine's parents, and Olivia Marcum as Katherine.

The story also features some allies who help during the exorcism, such as Okwui Okpokwasili's ritualistic healer, Raphael Sbarge's Baptist pastor, Danny McCarthy's Pentecostal preacher and EJ Bonilla's Father Maddox.

Some of these characters could be featured again in future sequels, but that hasn't been confirmed yet.

We could definitely expect to see Ellen Burstyn again as Chris MacNeil, even if it's just a brief cameo or a much-needed assistance for the next exorcism.

The Exorcist: Deceiver plot - Who will be possessed next?

As we mentioned before, The Exorcist: Believer does not end with a cliffhanger, nor does it leave any door open for a continuation.

This could mean The Exorcist: Deceiver's plot could also feature a stand-alone story, with a new group of characters, although that is just pure speculation for now.

"Before we started filming this, we had a roadmap of where we might go," director David Gordon Green explained in an interview with Fandom.

"You always say a trilogy is something that's manageable for the public to kind of consume that concept," he added.

In order to keep it "manageable" for new audiences, both Green and producer Jason Blum feel watching the original The Exorcist isn't a necessary requirement to enjoy The Exorcist: Believer – or the rest of the trilogy that is underway.

"I also want to make sure that this is a movie that does exist on its own so you don't need to have seen the original film, you don't need to expand it if this is what feels honest in its own right. But then if fans respond and it feels like we want to go deeper, we've got characters and tangents and detours and ways to explore and expand this," Green teased.

"With the concept of exorcism, it's vast, it's infinite, it's spiritual. There's a world of uncertainty out there and there's nothing I like better than poking my head into the unknown," he added, without offering any specifics about what The Exorcist: Deceiver might look like.
