The Golden Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis Obtusa ‘Aurea’) is one of my favorite evergreen conifers. It’s an ornamental delight in any garden landscape with its pyramidal shape and golden-green scale-like foliage. The bark is reddish-brown and lemon-scented. Aside from its use as an ornamental, these trees are grown for timber in Japan and are used for temples, palaces and shrines. One of Japan’s most famous landmarks, the Osaka Castle, is made of hinoki cypress timber. These trees do best in full sun and make great privacy hedges. Hinoki cypress is also one of the most popular bonsai specimens. Each pack comes with basic instructions for germination.
