Flora of North America recognizes two varieties of P. menziesii, both native to the U.S. Variety menziesii is native to the west coast and variety glauca is native to most of the western U.S., including Colorado.
This species is wind pollinated; pollen is dispersed during the spring. It is also an important larval host for one specialist butterfly.
