Sonia Sanchez was born Wilsonia Benita Driver on September 9, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama. After her mother died in childbirth a year later, Sanchez lived with her paternal grandmother and other relatives for several years. In 1943, she moved to Harlem with her sister to live with their father and his third wife.

She earned a B.A. in political science from Hunter College in 1955. She also did postgraduate work at New York University and studied poetry with Louise Bogan. Sanchez formed a writers' workshop in Greenwich Village, attended by such poets as Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Haki R. Madhubuti (Don L. Lee), and Larry Neal. Along with Madhubuti, Nikki Giovanni, and Etheridge Knight, she formed the "Broadside Quartet" of young poets, introduced and promoted by Dudley Randall.

Like any book of essays, poems or short stories, some really catch and some dont. I love how she uses the page and play with words to make movement, emotions and promote thought. Her feels are raw and she gets straight to the point. Very much appriciate Sonia Sanchez.

When you read this, read this aloud. When you read this aloud, speak it with the flow. When you let the words flow, you will feel the meaning. When you feel the meaning of them words, your mind will transform. Read this. Now. And don’t stop reading it aloud and transforming your mind.

This is a great book of poems written in 1970 by a poet whose voice I find to be very soothing. I heard her speak and recite poetry at Case Western Reserve University years ago. When I read what she writes I can stiLL hear her gentLe voice. Her styLe is consistent, as it is just her reading in her ordinary voice, Like a teacher or a Mother. She’s animated, with a touch of humor. I couLd Listen to her read for a whiLe. She reminds me of my Mother reading. I wonder did she ever go on Reading 🌈 Rainbow. 🤔
