Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) starting bonsai - 3-4 years old

This is a starting bonsai, Hinoki Cypress, variety 'Rigid dwarf'. A tree will come in a plastic training pot with a tray. Height is approximately 35 cm with pot, pot length is 16.5 cm, UK grown. It will be one of the tree in the picture.

Hinoki cypress is one of traditional bonsai trees in Japan. When it reaches maturity, hinoki has clouds of foliage supported above branches that have become bare and exposed. The scale-like leaves are dark green and form flat fanning fronds. The bark is reddish brown and peels in strips.

The hinoki cypress needs a place in full sun during the growing season. In winter it also needs much light. Protect the trees against hard frost and icy winds. Water the hinoki cypress as soon as the soil gets dry, but don't keep the roots soaking wet all the time. Use lime-free water, in winter water less but never let the rootball dry out completely. The foliage likes humidity and can suffer when exposed to hot dry wind.
