Picea abies Photo Gallery 2012

monkeytreeboy15
11 years ago

Well, there are some photo galleries we simply can't do without. For instance, the popular Norway Spruce has countless cultivars that everyone would love to share. I'll start with one of my favorite cultivars:

Picea abies 'Pusch' (a cultivar that produces numerous reddish-pink cones even at a young age)

{{gwi:607405}}

Picea abies 'Brno' (a miniature cultivar found as a witch's broom and named for the second-largest city of the Czech Republic)

{{gwi:607406}}

{{gwi:607407}}

Share yours! I know you have at least one..

    That was not a typo - I got it from Coenosium Gardens which has it listed as 'Von Bemmel'. Oh well, I'll change it to 'Van Bemmel' then. Thanks.

    'Van Bemmel' indeed. I too purchased my plant from Coenosium Gardens, but I did some investigating and found 'Van Bemmel' to be the proper name.

    Also 'Van Bemmel' is not it's correct name, it is 'Van Bemmel's Dwarf' which was found in 1990 by Mr. van Bemmel from the Netherlands.

    "Von" is German for "from"
    "Van" is Dutch for "from"

    'Van Bemmel's Dwarf' - noted and changed again, thanks.

    Yours looks great, Sam, and even appears to be putting out a leader. This plant seems to grow faster than I was lead to believe. Here's how CG describes it: "This miniature ball grows almost as slowly as 'Wichtel' and is also difficult to propagate because the cuttings are so tiny. It grows about 1/4" per year."

    Clement, I love your 'Kitzbuhler Alpenhexe'. It looks like a more compact version of 'Hillside Upright'. I gather from the name that it's not available in the US.

    Alex, I too was surprised by its rapid growth; however, some newly-grafted conifers grow quickly for the first few years and slow after they are established. Maybe someone can provide more feedback if this is true..

    Nice stuff, everyone.

    'Anita's Golden Cloak' (a new cultivar brought about by Bob Fincham's cross between 'Gold Drift' and 'Acrocona' and named by Dave (Glacier's End) in honor of his wife Anita)
    You follow all that? ;-)

    Another one of Bob Fincham's golden seedlings resulting from the cross between Picea abies 'Gold Drift' and 'Acrocona':
    Picea abies 'Amber Flickers' (This special cultivar was never widely available for sale. It was the last one left to purchase at Coenosium Gardens, and I love the intense golden color that seems akin to the color "amber"--a very fitting name)

    Here are a couple other older examples of some old favorite cultivars. I purchased both from Coenosium Gardens about 10 years ago. I consider them both to be important plants for the conifer collector
    Picea abies 'Clanbrassiliana.' The first named conifer cultivar.

    A few of my favorite P. abies:

    Picea abies 'Tufty': highly unusual because of its extremely short needles
    {{gwi:607475}}

    Picea abies 'Will's Zwerg': perfect form
    {{gwi:607476}}

    Picea abies 'Gold Strike': I don't know much about this one. At first I thought it was pendulous, but it's turning out to be more upright. It's smaller in every way than 'Gold Drift' but with just as much color.
    {{gwi:607478}}

    Picea abies 'Perry's Gold': Despite it being in the 90's for most of the summer and in mostly sunny conditions, those branches on the left are still gold. What's up with that?

    I like those too, Matt. You have a particularly nice specimen of 'Will's Zwerg'!

    Yet another of Bob Fincham's golden seedling from the cross between 'Acrocona' and 'Gold Drift':
    Picea abies 'Honey Pot' (Coenosium Gardens, of course; picture from early June)

    Matt, both are very nice 'Will's Zwerg' aka 'Obergaertner Bruns'.
    The thing with this cultivar is that it need to be trained with only one leader which is situated in the centre of the plant.
    Because of mass production a lot of ugly specimens will come into the trade and that's why I think Will do have one he's ashamed for...then, why did he buy it?

    Ireena, that's avery nice 'Dunganga', looking to it's yearly growth it seems to be pretty old.
    The 'Cruenta' is also a beauty, unfortunately it isn't red all year...

    Al, you're showing us a Picea orientalis 'Skylands' which doesn't belong to this topic as all specimens showing here are Picea abies cultivars...
    May be you can also show it at the Picea orientalis Photo Gallery?
    Thanks for showing us that very nice tree!

    Rispetto, your one without a name looks like a 'Faehndrig' or 'Little Gem' to me...

  • whaas_5a
    11 years ago

    Ireena, where is that picture from? If its your place, you are due for many more pics!

    Edwin, I had to laugh at this message:
    Because of mass production a lot of ugly specimens will come into the trade and that's why I think Will do have one he's ashamed for...then, why did he buy it?

    I wish I wasn't so picky but this is one that was purchased mail order. Finally found a couple nurseries I can rely on but previously I'd say half of what I purchased via mail order where duds.

    A not so gold 'Gold Drift'. I do like its crawling habit, I intend to grow it like this. Although I could change my mind with that leader material to the right.

    Although not as beautiful as all other trees posted here (yet!), I wanted to post pictures of my Norway Spruces too.
    I extracted the seeds from cones of regular forest Norway Spruces, so no special cultivars either.

    Unfortunately your 'Virgata' is in reality a 'Cranstonii'.
    Most of the times the 'Virgata' in the U.S. is wrongly named...

    Hi Edwin,

    I'm trying to learn the distinction between 'Virgata' and 'Cranstonii.'

    Here is a link to the cultivar that Bob Fincham is selling as 'Virgata' through Coenosium Gardens. Is this the right one?

    Dave, yes, Bob is showing a true 'Virgata'.
    It's very easy to see the main differences by it's upper side branches.
    The one's on a 'Virgata' are horizontal.
    The one's on a 'Cranstonii' are curved.
    Also the branch structures at older specimens are differend...
