Abies koreana Photo Gallery 2010
Feel free to post some of yours. I'm 'behind schedule', so I'm going to load wave after wave of new photos. Hopefully they're more enjoyable then nuisance!
Abies koreana 'Silver Show'. About 5 years old. Similar to 'Silberlocke', very nice new silvery growth and cones at an early age.
'Compacta'. Don't know much about it. Looks pretty dense.
'Freudenburg'. Seems to want to go more upright. Slow growing regardless.
'Cis'. 10 years old? A great round, low mound. Very dense.
'Horstmann'. No real information here. Perhaps Edwin can help on these various cultivars?
'Silber Reif'. Seems to be more upright?
'Nadelkissen'. Bought this Winter from Coenosiums. Huge stock, probably 5-7 years old.
'Oberon'. Worried a little about this guy, looks healthy and buds present but no push yet. Hoping...
'Zwergform Wurstmeyer'. ??
Let's see some of yours!
Tons more to come - Abies koreana is one of my favorite conifer species.

13 years agoHi Will,
I can help you with some info:
Abies koreana 'Silver Show' is a seedling selection from 'Silberlocke' found by the Wittboldt-Müller Nursery from Germany.
It will keep it's needles curved also at a later age and it's cones are green instead of purple.'Compacta' is the old name for 'Compact Dwarf'.
It's found as a seedling at the Von Gimborn Arboretum in Rotterdam, Holland.'Freudenburg' is a dwarf upright form.
'Horstmann' is a dwarf seedling selection from the Horstmann Nursery from Germany.
This is the one at my Pinetum, it's 7 years old
Abies koreana 'Horstmann''Silber Reif' must be written as 'Silberreif' and is also a seedling from 'Silberlocke', found buy the Hachmann Nursery from Germany.
'Silberreif' means 'Silver Ring'.'Nadelkissen' is also found as a seedling selection by the K. Wittboldt-Müller Nursery from Germany.
'Nadelkissen' means 'Pin Cushion'.'Oberon' is found as a seedling selection by the Stolwijk Nursery from Holland and was first introduced as 'Stolwijk no.2'.
Your plant lookes still fine, the buds are still shining!
'Oberon' means "King of the dwarfs".'Zwergform Wurstmeyer' must be written as 'Zwergform Wüstemeyer'.
This one is selected as a dwarf seedling by my German friend Werner Wüstemeyer.
'Zwergform' means 'Dwarf Form'.firefightergardener
Original Author13 years agoThanks for the help, Edwin, you're a walking encyclopedia of conifers. Legendary!
Henk, your conifers look photoshopped. Incredible!
Here's a few more of my 'ugly' specimens(LOL):
Abies koreana 'Silber Mavers'. Very similar to Silber Perl'.
'Pinocchio' Very very miniature growth. Mine got stepped on - and making a full recovery!!
'Piccolo'. An open, irregular dwarf.
'Kahout's Ice Breaker'. Very few better conifers I appreciate more.
'Green Carpet'. My specimen has grown like a weed, it's probably 5 years old. Cones soon? :)
'Gelbbunt' New growth golden/green and some of the color remains all year. May burn in full sun.
'Blaue Zwo'. Very dwarf.
'Blaue Pfiff'. A magnificiently colored medium upright. Amazing plant. Sometimes listed incorrectly as 'Glauca'(as in my tag).

13 years agoAbies koreana 'Zwergform Wüstemeyer' are renamed Abies koreana "Lippetal"
Clémentfirefightergardener
Original Author13 years ago'Lippetal'
Damn, means I have a duplicate!
'Nanaimo'. Presumably named after Nanaimo, British Columbia.
'Taiga'. Similar to 'Cis'.
'Tundra'
'Gait'. A narrow upright with mass cones. One of my favorites.
'Starker's Dwarf'. A very bushy, unique shrubby korean fir. Don't think it cones.

Original Author13 years agoAbies koreana 'Fliegender Untertasse'. Apparently translates to 'Umbrella'? Flat as can be.
'Silberlocke'. The classic.
'Aurea'. Also a classic, and for obvious reasons. 7-9 years old? Starting a leader.

Fliegende Untertasse actually means flying saucer!

13 years agohi Will, take a deep and close look at your 'Aurea.' The pic looks more like understock to me. 'Aurea' will however, develop a leader in time.

Original Author13 years agoThanks Richard, 'Flying Saucer' is even more amusing!
Dave(That's right isn't it?), I've checked as have visitors and it's clearly coming out of recent growth. I'll have to keep an eye on it - it's either a strong leader or it's a reversion/sport.

13 years agoyup, this is Dave. Just keep an eye on the foliage as it matures. If it's golden, you've got normal growth. If it's green, then it's trying to turn back into an Abies koreana.
If it's gold, let it go, if it's green, chop it out. IMO, A.k. 'Aurea' is a magificent tree when full of cones.

Thanks.
I have planned to remove the understock this fall. We have just bought and repotted the Icebreaker in march.hostajim1
13 years agoWill, that's an amazing collection!!!!!! what a beautiful job. I wonder if I could get a few of the cones from you to germinate? I'll do some hosta trading of course, good luck with all of your future collections, hostajim

Original Author13 years agoHeya Jim - glad you like them. Sorry I have not called you back - I was waiting for a less-rainy day before I tried to schedule a visit but it's been raining all the time! You'd be welcome to some cones, I imagine soon enough I'll have more cones then I know what to do with.

13 years agoRispeto, your Abies koreana "Brevifolia" are not right,
the needles are small but not recurved.

13 years agoSome more info:
Will, it looks that your 'Piccolo' understock part made some new growth at it's left side.
Remove this part before it will take over this beauty!'Kahout's Ice breaker' must bew ritten as 'Kohout's Ice Breaker' but this is just a typo I think...
'Gelbbunt' You have to stake this one, it's an upright grower.
'Blaue Zwo' isn't a dwarf, it will grow like the species with blue needles.
You also have to stake this one.'Blauer Pfiff' must be written as 'Blauer Pfiff'.
It derives from the K. Wittboldt-Müller Nursery from Verden, Germany who threated the cones by kobald rays.
I've seen these as a flatgrower but also as a upright tree form.Darek, 'Denis' must be written as 'Dennis'.
I like the 'Rodzyngold' very much.
Bring one to me when the heat left your country ;0)Rispetto, Very nice pics you showing us!
You come from Bermuda but send us your greetings from sunny Poland...are you on your hollidays overthere?'Kohout's Hexe'

13 years agoWhat are the caracteristic of "Nanaimo " ?
He look like a normal Abies koreana.
Clémentgardener365
13 years agoHi Clement,
Purple cones. I found it and grafted from that photo my own plant from 2007 and that graft is now about 6" tall. I wouldn't call it exceptional. Don't know enough to tell you though. Seems much more narrow than typical koreana.
