Cryptomeria japonica Photo Gallery 2010

Another of the conifer series, please share any of interest.

Cryptomeria japonica 'Vilmoriana'. Dwarf and very dense.

'Atawhai'. Another dwarf with an irregular habit.

'Tenzan'. A miniature, very compact.

'Jindai'. Probably mislabeled. Another dwarf, this specimen is about 10 years old. Maybe 'Compacta'?

'Mushroom'. Not my favorite cultivar!

Your 'Vilmoriniana' will get large over time. Mine is around 45 years old.

Will, your 'Jindai' is a 'Compressa' which is smaller in all parts then 'Vilmoriniana' ('not 'Vilmoriana').

The 'Mushroom' is a very nice cultivar at a later age, Stephen has a very nice specimen.

    'Araucarioides'

    'Broom'

    Awesome pics, Will!
Cryptomeria are some of my favorite conifers!
Botann, it's always a pleasure to see your majestic trees.
Edwin, the 'Broom' and 'Compacta' have a giant sequoia look to their foliage...very nice!

I just happened to take a pic of my 'Tansu' the other day...

Back to 'work' today after my softball season final playoffs. Lots of conifers that need some photo time, so here's a few more today:

Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon'. I needed a picture in Autumn/Winter as well as this guy was BRIGHT orange, a truely remarkable color on a conifer.

'Yellow Twig'. Needs a new home away from the shady pine.

A couple more in my back yard gardens:

Cryptomeria japonica 'Pygmea'. Dense and very nice form. 5-6 years old or so.

'Tansu'. Damn I take some bad photos. :(

Will, 'Pygmea' must be written as 'Pygmaea' and I think your's isn't the right one, the foliage is to rough, your's looks like a 'Monstrosa Nana'.

The old name for 'Tansu' is 'Yatsubusa'.

'Knaptonensis'. I finally planted it since this picture was taken.

Jindai pruned to look like an old growth Cryptomeria. Picture is two years old. Just as I was about to get the orchard ladder to prune the top, it started snowing and I called it quits for then. It has been worked over several times since.

Botann(sure like to call you something else(!), that pruned cryptomeria is beautiful, and a wonderful work of art. I am thoroughly impressed.

Can someone help me with this one? A bright white-gold cryptomeria japonica:

    'Barabits Gold' ?

  • cryptomeria

Barabits Gold is more golden yellow ( the whole plant ). Sekkan has such white yellow parts. But it´s not easy to see the difference on young plants.Later the habit is different. Barabits Gold grows faster, more narrow than Sekkan . I think it´s Sekkan.

    'Elegans' winter colour is bronze.
'Elegans Aurea' winter colour is yellow-greenish.
'Elegans Viridis' is green al year.

'Barabits Gold' is also known as 'Hungarian Gold'.

Hey, Zsolt! You've shown us some lovely pale Cryptomerias!

Today, I finally took pictures of my 'Sekkan,' which was planted this Spring in the middle of March.

I was surprised to see that it's grown nearly 25 inches during the past five months in the ground!

Here is a link that might be useful: Pygmaea

    sugi:

Nice plant.'Pygmaea' is similar to ' Nana', but 'Pygmaea' has a more open habit. The colour should be different in winter ( see literature ), but I cannot see that.

Will: one question to your ' Yellow Twig'. When do this cultivar show a yellow colour?

    Thanks

Wolfgang, I'll have to check it closer this year. There is clearly some yellow-tinge to it, but to me that's common among many Cryptomeria's. It's been given a little better spot with more sun and more room to grow and now I'll have it for the first time throughout the growing season. If I can remember, or you can remind me, I'll post new photos this Summer.

A couple of photos I can add:

Cryptomeria japonica 'Radicans'. A fast growing, upright unusual cultivar. The sprays of foliage seem to fountain down from the top. A nice deep green color.

'Elegans'. Unusual winter coloration and consistently does this on this plant(about 6-7 years old).

    Thanks Will,

I will remind you in summer.Radicans nice plant. Not common in Europe. Elegans has a nice winter colour. Here when it's very cold the colour is more violett. I like it, too, but most people who visit me says in winter: oh, what a pity this plant is nearly dead.

    Thanks

    Wolfgang
