Barabits Life Monument Gallery

Dear Friends,

I'd like to give honour to a lost breeder, who left us in 2003 after a long life and a rich heritage for all conifer lovers.

His heritage is mainly found outside Hungary in Holland (Edwin), Austria (Honemann Arboretum) and Belgium (Clent) thanks to the times when he lived. In the country, which was a closed area for freedom, Barabits gave his plants to friends, who took them to freedom. All, what he gave to western hands became world famous plants. The rest for we are seeking now...

In the Conifer Treasury 1995 I described over 220 cultivars of Barabits. I try to give a list, what of this enormous Life Monument is still alive, or photographed ever. I'll be very thankful for any good news or Photos.

This will be a long story.

Dear Clément, it is possible, that the last motherplant is in your hands!

Wonderful tribute to a lost friend !

....wish I had been involved in conifers earlier, so I might have known him !
(a few photos of the man himself would also be appreciated)

    Thanks,

    Hello Zsolt,

thanks for the beginning of this long story.
I do only know a few facts about his life. And it began, when I planted S.G. Barabits Requiem and C.j. Barabits Gold some years before. But I hope I will learn much more about his life and his cultivars.

    Thanks

    Wolfgang

    Dear Jaro,

thanks, and your wish will realized soon...
I have also a photo of Barabits.

He was a forrestal engeener, and since the early 50's he worked on selecting exotas for forrestal use in Hungary. That time was his job to select possible very big trees of seed. Some Chamaecyparis forests are still alive in the more rainy western counties of Hungary. He mad also forrestal experiences to settle in Abies species, Cryptomeria, Sequoiadendron, Pinus any many others.
He was the supervisor of the hungarian forest nurseries, and saw millions of seedlings. Thats the key to his rich coniferography.
We usually find what in the forests, but he told me once, 'I made a blue one' of an earlier selection. This was his habit, to find just anything was few for him.

Well, I have some more photos of his own "made" conifer world.

It's great to remember where many of our pleasable things came from. This is a great tribute(with some awesome photos) to what sounds like a remarkable man. I'll take extra pride knowing some of the plants he discovered now grow in my garden(and across the world).

Thank you for providing this piece of history Zsolt.

Zsolt, your comment isn't complety right.
You mentioned the Chamaecyparis laws. 'Globus Hógolyó' which I received from the Bömer Nursery as 'Schneeball' which is German for "Snow Ball".
This isn't found as a witches'broom from 'Mini Globus' but a white variegated branchmutation.

The second photo you showed us derives from my website from which I didn't give you any permission to use it and isn't the same one, it's the 'Silver Ball' which is a totaly differend cultivar.
I think you have to do you homework much better before you mention it on the web!

    Edwin,
the original description text also speaks about brunchmutation, the translation was not the best. Barabits cultivars were so many times renamed in Holland and the GBR, that finally I missed the Silver Ball.

About permissions and homework themes I sent you a mail, but it would be more simple, if I invited you with your photos. With the linking some of your photos I was going to give you the homour, as the owner of the possible biggest Barabits collection in Holland in the name of the hungarian conifer lovers.

Join us with your Barabits photos, please. Maybe other dutch nurseries could have any other photos, too. The dutch colleauges has now the possibility to give their honour to Barabits joining to the collection.

The successful Juniperus scopulorum cultivars of the 80s from the USA are all sick in the european inside continent. We had to change them to healthy clons as of Barabits and other hungarian breeders joined, too. Maybe, this ones should be sent back to the States to make there a bigger choice.

This is not the first postumus (?) clone under the name of Barabits. Im not very delighted of this plants, but there is always the hidden maybe". As Barabits found what, he gave of his plants to anybody, who visited him. In 1995 we made clear his Life Monument, but who had so much, the maybe" will be still could work. Maybe also, that some plants are living anywhere in hidden and lost gardens, where the owners are long ago died, and nobody knows, what the next generations owned.
Despite all maybee" possibilities, the Barabits file must be ever closed for the conifering history. On the other hand: who could be so fool to find Barabits plants 7 years after his death, instead of introducing it with his own name?

I hope, You guess now the shadow side of my work, and the causes of my hesitation.

Anyway, the happy side of this great conifer adventure just brings us pure facts. What we have photos of his heritage, known in nurseries, they will or could survive. The lost garden of Barabits will be only an interesting forest", as Bob Fincham wrote some month ago as thinking about his own gardens future. We need sometimes wise men to understand better lifes situations

Last, but not least, this cultivar is a nice, lovely small conifer.

    Wow!

    ...

    ...

I don't know what's more impressive - The number of great plants Barabit's was able to find and introduce or the amount of work you put into this!

I think I spent a half-hour checking all of the different plants out and noticing the great number of plants I've never heard of or seen before.

    Wow. Well done Zsolt.

    Will,
really, with some friends we spent a time to newly discover and collect these plants in a gallery.
The ELTE BG Budapest started to collect hungarian breeded conifers, and they have now about 100 great pots, partly with the plants of Barabits.

Today I got the news, that the City of Sopron - home of Barabits - opens a Barabits Garden with his cultivars, honoured him. I'll donate them too, as I have about 30 of his plants.

The truth is, that except the 10-20 best favoured plants, which came mainly to Holland and well managed, the rest 200 cultivars are partly here with photos, or forgotten. Maybe such a quantity is too much for the market, and only the most interestings can survive.

I guess, I also learned an other study meanwhile collecting his plants. It's a nice job to create new conifers, but to make them ready for the market, is a totally different situation.

If you buy a fresh introduced conifer beauty anywhere, there are also ten other forgotten ones behind, which you never been informed...

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Glad a garden monument is being made to honor Barabits and his selections.

    Thanks Zsolt!

Cryptomeria japonica 'Hungarian Gold' is the old name for what is now Cryptomeria japonica 'Barabits Gold'.
I don't understand why someone from Hungaria make such a big mistake because he's familiar in the way that it must be written...

    Edwin,
please read my last private mail from yesterday.

'Barabits Gold' is known in GBR as 'Hungarian Gold' from the Windsor Park. This plant above was propagated from the Windsor Park exemplar, as the owner of the garden told me.

It is not an old name, but a synonym for the same plant from the GBR, as they name it. I'm wondering about you.

Use your email for further informations, please.

    Zsolt
