when planted .. how.. where .. why jammed against the fence with no room for potential growth ... and ... how does the sun hit the fence .. are you baking it???

I planted it back in late March. It does have a good six inches round the back between it and the fence. The sun hits the fence behind it, and it only gets the sun from around 5pm onwards. It doesn't look like a second flush....

Hi Ken, I am just a few miles North of Fort William. When I planted it I made sure there was good drainage and planted it with a good compost. My soil is slightly sandy but has a neutral PH

Brown needles that fall off easily is not a good sign. The plant is definitely stressed, if not a goner. I have had plants that survived after losing most of their needles, but I've never pulled one through after all of the needles were lost.

As to the why, my first guess would be a root problem. Too much or too little water? An encircling root? A too-deep planting?

Does not look good. It is about a foot too close to the fence even at this young stage (and worse later on). Good air circulation is a must and if that corner post was set in cement there will be very alkaline soil there. If it lives, move it in the fall.
