Picea obovata 'Arctos' and Others

I went to Bickelhaupt today to see Picea obovata 'Arctos'. Many a times I've seen outstanding blue-colored-conifers lose their vibrant blue hues during winter. This is one example. Of course thru the growing season and while temperatures continue warmimg, it'll become more and more blue.

Dax, those pics are just great. It's one of my very favorite gardens to visit in the upper Midwest. Do you know if their Sciadopytis (?) recovered from the '13-'14 nightmare winter?

Hi Bob, I can't say I've seen a Sciadop at Bickelhaupt.

Brilliant pictures Dax! Thanks for bringing us those.

Isn't 'Quill Pig' a recent find? What's the story of it reaching the Arboretum?

Quill Pig is recent. It was found by Evan Reed in New York, USA. How it reached Bickelhaupt I'm going to presume was thru Dennis Hermsen.

Dax, you gotta walk across the foot bridge and explore the other side of the property. ;)

Saw one of the two Arctos we planted last year and noticed the same thing. Great photos- Chamaecyparis 'Golden Mop' is planted quite a bit but is still one of my favorites for year-round color in Iowa.

Oh I did a bit of walking :)

Those pisifera's really move the eye to them.

Thanks for the mini photo tour through the arboretum, Dax. How far do you live from Bickelhaupt?

Arctos looks like a winner - are you grafting that one? I presume that's scion wood you're showing us at the end of the first post. And the other shots are super too.

That is wood. I'm an hour and 20 minutes from Bickelhaupt. It's quite a nice drive along the Mississippi River and while the road is flat the hills that occupy the road are scenic.
