Not close enough to make too fine a distinction but does not look like 'Blue Surprise'. With the brown patches showing, I'd guess one of the Cyano-Viridis group of Chamaecyparis pisifera cultivars.

you cant compare lawsons to obtusa ....

as far as i know.. obt's dont have the law root issues ... at least in my MI ...

besides.. i would be surprised if many of the obt's arent rooted rather than grafted ...

where are you ... in z6.. big city name ,... i had a large number of laws in my z5 mi ... couple bucks each.. and within a few years.. they were all gone ... im wondering how sure your z6 is ... one bad winter and you might lose them.. or not ...

whats the tall blue behind ... and what the issue with that one???

Thanks. Im east side of Detroit, rated zone 6b, I guess because proximity to the lakes. But yes not every winter will be without dips below zone 6b. This is an image I found online, not my garden unfortunately. I just really like the little blue stumps, perhaps they were pruned to stay like this. So you think it would futile long term to attempt to grow a lawson in this area?

It's just the lawsonianas that you want on DR rootstock.

Thank you very much for the advice. I think I better stay away from the Lawsonia Blue Surprise. We dont have the best draining soil either so the odds are really not in our favor.

Plants in photo definitely one of the Chamaecyparis lawsoniana juvenile cultivars. There are multiple different ones of these derived just from 'Ellwoodii' by itself. But about 'Blue Surprise' specifically

I had two Blue Surprises and lost them both. As I recall, they had a narrow pointed leader at the top. Yours look more flat topped.
