The Norway spruce is a large pyramidal evergreen tree that is suitable for a large lawn or park. It makes an excellent shelter for wildlife and is very effective as a windbreak when planted in a row of multiple trees.

Characteristic of the Norway spruce include branchlets that droop vertically from the main branches, deep green needle-like leaves and pendulous and cylindrical seed bearing cones, which at 4 to 7 inches are the longest of the spruces.

Size: Height 40 to 60 ft; Width 25 to 30 ft.

Germination Instructions

Stratification: Seeds have a shallow dormancy and are easy to germinate. However, for optimal germination, provide about 30 to 45 days cold, moist stratification at 3° C (37° F) to 5° C (41°  F).

  1. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.
  2. Place seeds in sandwich bag(s) with a bit of damp sand or vermiculite to keep moist.
  3. Place the bag(s) with seeds in refrigerator for about 30 to 45 days.
  4. After the required time take the seeds out of the refrigerator and sow the seeds in pots  1/8 inch deep and cover lightly. Water gently so as not to wash away the seeds. Keep soil moist but not wet.
