Picea asperata (Dragon Spruce)

Picea asperata (Dragon Spruce) is a species of spruce tree native to the mountainous regions of China, specifically in the southwestern provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi. It is named after its dragon-like appearance, with twisted and contorted branches that resemble mythical dragon figures.

Dragon Spruce is a medium-sized evergreen tree that typically grows to a height of 40 to 60 feet (12 to 18 meters). It has a narrow, conical crown and dense foliage. The needles are dark green, stiff, and sharply pointed, measuring about 0.8 to 1.2 inches (2 to 3 centimeters) in length. The bark of mature trees is gray-brown and scaly.

This species of spruce prefers high-altitude mountainous regions, where it thrives in cool, temperate climates. It can withstand cold winters and is adapted to survive in harsh conditions, including rocky soils and strong winds.

Dragon Spruce is highly valued for its unique aesthetic qualities and is often used in ornamental plantings, rock gardens, and as a specimen tree. Its twisted branches and irregular growth patterns make it a visually striking addition to landscapes.

It's worth noting that while Picea asperata is sometimes referred to as Dragon Fir, it is indeed a spruce tree and not a true fir. The name Dragon Fir is a common misnomer due to its fir-like appearance, but taxonomically, it belongs to the spruce genus (Picea).
