Hilda Doolittle was born on September 10, 1886 in Pennsylvania. With her move to London in 1911 her work as a poet and novelist truly began. This move coincided with the very beginnings of the Imagist Poetry movement as it began to emerge under the guidance of Ezra Pound and Richard Aldington. A woman of great charm she was from 1916–17, the literary editor of the Egoist journal, and her own poetry was published in the English Review and the Transatlantic Review. As War continued to haunt Europe, H.D., as she was now more popularly known, suffered the death of her brother and the breakup of her marriage to Richard Aldington. She was deeply influenced by Ancient Greek literature as can be seen when her beautiful verse is read. As a poet some would say she was exceptional. Although she only married once she had a number of affairs with both men and women for which she was unapologetic and became an icon for the gay rights and feminist movements.
